The "sit and spin" incident was the beginning. Mom was furious with Dad after that, having daily screaming matches after our family dinners about how wrong his behavior was. Mendel tried to intervene at first, but soon saw it was worthless to try and argue with my stubborn mother.

Dad finally snapped. His anger boiled all the way over as he and Mom were just getting into it. Throwing her hands in the air, Mom went on and on about how Dad was being a bad influence and teaching me the wrong way to deal with negative emotions. Her words were cut off by the sound of skin hitting skin.

But it wasn't Mom who intercepted Dad's slap. It was Mendel, who had jumped in front of his wife as soon as he saw Dad's hand raise into the air. You can still see the faint red handprint across his cheek to this day.
