You've had a crush on Light for several years up to this point.
It isn't like you want to be in love with him. You know every other girl likes him too. The reality of you and him getting together is slimmer than you want it to be, but, you can't blame the others for liking him. He has a beautiful face, a perfect body, and a charming, respectful, kind personality. Yet, there is one thing about him that settles the idea of him being your crush: his intelligence. He is one of, if not, the smartest student in Japan. If his looks somehow don't win someone's heart, it's his ingeniousness that does.
Today, he's supposed to say his speech during the ceremony for the freshman at To-Oh University. Your veins fill with tremendous joy, anticipation rising as you wait for him to speak in front of hundreds of people. On top of it all, you are also proud because of his score. He told you a week ago that he got a 100% on his entrance exam.
'How does he do it,' you think, in utter awe.
You smile bright, as you watch him stride up the aisle that leads to the stage, showing his humble confidence. But your face goes from a sweet smile to a confused contort when you gaze your eyes upon the strange individual that follows him.
A man with a plain, white tee shirt and baggy, blue jeans, is right behind Light.
You sit in shock, mouth agape. You look him up and down, and notice that he doesn't even have socks on. This is a formal event, and dressing like that is a slap in the face to To-Oh students and professors of every kind.
It's almost as if he's saying, "I'm better than all of you. I didn't even have to bother dressing up for this."
When they both step on the stage, you hear the host of the ceremony claiming through the microphone, that the top scores have been achieved by Light Yagami and Hideki Ryuga.
As much as you don't want to admit it, you're impressed that someone is finally living up to Light's standards of intellect.
The next day, you follow the sound of a bustling crowd, your senses eventually guiding you to a large group of people gathered by the tennis court.
Over all the muffled chatter, you make out the words, "It's Hideki Ryuga against Light Yagami!"
Hearing your best friend's name, you immediately push your way through the people, only to find Light and his new acquaintance, playing a friendly game of tennis.
They begin to hang out a lot after that. You think you might be able to get used to the two spending time together, but after awhile, you give up and start to question their friendship in its entirety.
'I've known Light since middle school, and never in his life has he hung out with someone like Hideki. He is either seen with athletes, nerds, or girls, not outcasts.'
You soon confront him about it, and he chuckles.
"You know what, (Y/N)? The truth is, I really don't know why I hang out with him," he says, with a growing grin.
He scratches the back of his head in thought, and replies, "I guess it's because he's exceptionally smart and I enjoy his company."
One month later, a serial killer that goes by the name of Kira disappears.
So does Light. You won't see him in person ever again.
When you hear of Light's disappearance, everything around you freezes. The sounds around you turn to hums and buzzes, and you hear random fits of ringing. Momentarily, you live in a world of white noise. To say the least, you're devastated.
Now, he's all you can think about, as he haunts your thoughts all day, and all night. You can't take the pain anymore, so you make a vow to yourself.
"I need to find out the truth."
You decide to gather all the information up about Light that you have and play through it all in order. You want to get a better understanding of what's going on, and maybe even see it in a new perspective.
'Light Yagami went missing one month after he said his speech for To-Oh. Before he went missing, he started to hang out with a polar opposite, Hideki Ryuga. Because they were so different in appearance, it has given me the hunch that he has something to do with Light's disappearance. But, by far, the most interesting thing about this whole ordeal, is when Light disappeared, so did Kira. Does this mean Light was Kira? And just who is Hideki Ryuga,' you wonder to yourself, striding home from your favorite cafe, taking in the scent of your coffee.
'Let's say Light is Kira. Who would want to eliminate him as soon as possible; who are Kira's worst enemies? Kira and criminals didn't get along, that's a given. Does this mean Ryuga is a highly intelligent criminal? No, Light was a smart person. If he was Kira, he would, unless in dire circumstances, immediately kill anyone who wishes to harm him. If he couldn't kill Hideki, Hideki must've had his real identity shielded. Kira's enemies...'
As you walk down the sidewalk, you pass little children playing tag and flying kites in the fresh, green grass. You attempt to block out the obnoxious screams they make and head further from school, plunging deeper into your thoughts.
Then, it hits you. You cease to walk, letting the possibilities and ideas flow. The shock of your conclusion forces your coffee cup to slip out of your hand. The steaming, brown liquid splatters all over your feet and the concrete. You stand there, wide-eyed, all the while, letting your brain take in the information.
'Kira's enemy, Hideki Ryuga. Hideki Ryuga is L.'
You gather your now empty coffee cup and various thoughts while experiencing a terrifying paranoia you had no intention of coming. Having this information, understanding that Ryuga is L could cost you your life.
As you continue home, you feel as if the whole world is keeping tabs on you.
'Okay, how am I going to go about this? I want to know Ryuga's involvement with Light's disappearance, so what should I do,' you ponder, approaching your dark, wooden door.
You unlock it and glide in, not being phased by the freezing air conditioning slapping your face. You have much more important things to worry about. The theories and ideas wonder over, through, and around your brain, giving you a slight pain in the center of your head. Sitting down at your Redwood, round kitchen table, you contemplate the possibilities of how you could solve this predicament. After moments of thinking, you decide what you need to do: confront him.
'I guess the only thing I can do now is meet him myself. If I do that, I will tell him that I know he's L and see if I can get a reaction out of him. I could wait, but if I do, there's no guarantee that he'll even stay at To-Oh, let alone answer any questions. He could leave without me even getting a chance to figure out what's going on. The probability of him admitting to being L is slim, but I have no other choice, and hardly any time left.'
