You enter your advanced calculus class the next day, inhaling the distinct school scent. Trying to find your seat, you observe the rows of tan desks and brown chairs. When you find your spot, you sit down and set your bag to the side of the desk's legs. You look behind your shoulder to see the weird man sulk through the doorway, and he sits down in the very back row. Well, you wouldn't necessarily call it sitting, more like crouching. He appears to be completely engulfed in thought, squatting in his chair, dark eyes down, the tip of thumb on his mouth.
'He definitely doesn't look like the world's greatest detective,' you think in slight disgust.
Hideki meets your questioning eyes when he feels you staring at him, and, in return, does the same back. You quickly set your gaze away, slightly embarrassed. Yet, the feeling of his burning stare doesn't subside for the rest of the class. You start to wonder if this is such a good idea, approaching a stranger and claiming he's the famous/infamous L.
Then another negative thought creeps in your mind.
'What if Light isn't Kira and is an innocent gone missing? Then I would be making a fool of myself! But... at least it would get me closer to finding the truth...'
After class, you follow behind him into the hall, heart pounding harder and faster with each step you take. You awkwardly tap your hand on his white, cotton shirt, not showing the intense nervousness you carry on the inside. He turns around and gives you an expressionless gaze.
"Is there anything I can help you with," he asks in a deep, monotone voice.
Your throat starts to choke up, but you take a deep breath and get on with it.
"Hideki. Hideki Ryuga. Y--"
"Yes, that's me, how may I assist you?"
You sigh in frustration, a tad angry at him for cutting you off before you could make your dramatic claim. But, you decide to brush it off.
"You're L."
'Now that it's out, I need to wait and observe. What will you do, Hideki Ryuga?'
To your astonishment, he shows no signs of pressure or stress. In fact, his relaxed lips turn up into a small smirk and let a scoff slip out.
"Now how did you come to that conclusion? Did Light tell you that?"
You recoil at his casual mention of Light, who is probably dead at the moment.
"You see, I once told him that as a joke, and he actually believed me for a while," he says, now turning his gaze downward, and putting the tip of one of his digits to his mouth, making him appear to be an unintelligent slacker.
You look into his eyes.
'Are you telling the truth? I'm almost positive you are, but I just need one extra push. Even if I stretch the truth just a tiny bit...'
"And Light Yagami is Kira."
You can't believe you said that. If he isn't Kira, you just disrespected the possibly dead man in the worst way possible. You take a deep, shaky breath.
'What's done is done. Show me a sign. Please, anything...'
His still, relaxed eyes widened ever so slightly. He leans over a bit towards you and he put his hands into his pockets.
"Kira?" he says with more emphasis than his normal voice.
'Yes, dipshit, can you not hear me? Why are you just standing there? Say something, go on!'
Your wishes were partially answered, as Hideki laughs the most awkward, loud laugh you have ever heard. Everyone around you two stares, making the situation all the more unsettling. You didn't realize he was going to react this way, and it catches you off guard.
'It seems that he is calm and collected unless overcome by a sudden, extreme emotion. Either he's very amused, or panicking. I can't tell...'
He gathers his emotions and is now smiling a half smile at you.
"To be honest with you, I believed that too. When he disappeared, so did Kira," he admits, mind and body slowly going back into their empty state, face relaxing once more.
"But then I remembered the short time we had together. He was such a kind, hardworking student, and was my only friend. I hope with all my being that he turns up, but," he says, placing his thumb back on his lips.
"Saying that Light Yagami is Kira, is complete nonsense, a mere coincidence."
You think with caution, but eventually, after a few seconds, accepts what he says, making your cold, heavy heart suffice.
'What am I saying? The person who was always so happy and sweet to everyone around him?'
You start to remember his gentle smile, affectionate nature, and warmhearted aura.
'No, Light couldn't have been Kira. Ryuga is right.'
You stand there, flustered. You stagger back, a little embarrassed, looking around and trying to figure out what you could possibly say that could atone for your sins.
"Yes... I'm sorry... you're right. Please forgive me." you stutter and slightly bow.
"No, it's alright," he says, with a hint of genuine in his voice.
"Please excuse me, I must get to class now," he says, slugging away, leaving you alone with your rushing thoughts and an empty soul.
L runs a hand through his jet black hair and puts his hands in his pockets.
'I absolutely can't believe it. For the first time since I realized my parents abandoned me, I panicked. I'm glad I didn't let it show. I couldn't let it show, even if I wanted to,' he talks to himself in his head, while heading to his economics class, cool and composed.
'I was going to drop out of university tomorrow, but now I don't think-- no. I know for a fact that I can't leave. This girl, how did she figure me out? Is she that smart, or was it a guess,' he ponders, crouching in his seat.
'No, that would be too much of a complex guess; It couldn't have been a guess.'
He fidgets with his feet and reaches into his plain backpack to pull out a golden Hostess cake before class starts.
'The probability that she actually did figure me out is about 15%. The likelihood that Light told her I'm L is much higher. I've seen them hang out once and awhile in the past, indicating that they are acquaintances... possibly even friends. He may have even told her that he was Kira, but that is very unlikely. Light was even smarter than everyone in Japan thought he was. He wouldn't have blown his cover for most any reason, unless completely necessary,' he thinks, swallowing the last bite of his packaged cake, sticking the trash in his pocket.
'I digress.'
He starts to play with the lustrous yellow crumbs on his desk, squishing them tightly between his thumb and index finger, compacting them into a flat, disk shape.
'Maybe,' he thinks, taking a particularly large crumb, and putting it close to his face, detecting it.
'Maybe she did,' he states, turning the crumb around, studying every tiny detail.
'In that case,' he stops turning the crumb around and suddenly squishes it.
'I will have to monitor this individual,' he decides, sucking the crumb off his index finger.
