After school, you decide to make some money by bringing your guitar to play in front of a coffee shop. You think it will keep your mind off of Light.

'I guess Light couldn't be Kira. Kira was a monster. Light couldn't be a monster, no matter how hard he tried,' you think, taking your guitar out of its case. You sit down on the black metal bench in front of the café and start to strum. You don't care if you get any words or lyrics wrong, and sing your heart out.

To his surprise, you can sing, and very well at that. You, without noticing it, have found the top detective on the planet's weakness. His heartbeat rises and becomes one with the music. His mind wonders far from how much you know, to you yourself. For hours, he relates to the music, tries to decode the lyrics, and figure out what they mean to you.

You, focused on the music, don't notice Hideki until the crowd subsides, and the light outside dims to dark.

He is so engulfed by your playing, that he is taken aback by the silence.

You spot Hideki standing beside a tree, thumb moving side to side on his creepy, wide grin.

"Oh, uh, hey Hideki! What brings you out this late," you ask while packing your guitar away. His smile drops back to a bored expression.

"I was just going to the café," he says emotionlessly, trying his hardest to walk past you. The last thing he wants right now is human interaction.

"Ah, same. I need some more coffee," you state, gathering your case and shaking your empty coffee cup.

L goes along with it.

He crouches down on a booth seat, and you sit in front of him.

'Great...' he says with sarcasm in his head.

A shy waitress walks up to the two of you.

"What would you two like to order?"

"I will have ten cake-pops and a small coffee, with a bowl of sugar cubes on the side." Hideki immediately states, without hesitation.

'I don't need to order too much, I don't plan on staying long,' he thinks.

You sit there, bewildered at how he could eat so much junk food, yet be so skinny nonetheless.

"May I please have a large cup of black coffee," you kindly ask.

"Coming right up." She smiles, bows, and walks off. You decide to break any upcoming awkward silence with some painful smalltalk.

"Yeah, I'm sorry about earlier, accusing you of being L and Light of Kira. It's just, the more I thought about him and Kira going missing at the same time, and so soon after meeting you, I got a little carried away with my thinking," you say sheepishly and let out a small, embarrassed laugh.

'So she did deduce this herself...what an intelligent woman...'

"No, it's okay," he says, feet shifting on top of each other.

"I suspected Light to be Kira too, them going missing at the same time. But he definitely couldn't be," he states, eyes now meeting yours.

"Light was a fun, kind, hardworking student. He was the only friend I ever had. This man definitely couldn't have been the monster that was Kira. Now L is a different story; I would love to be L. He's the greatest detective in the world, who most likely brought down Kira. He's famous, rich, smart, and probably even gets all the girls he wants," L says, letting a smile slide, amused with his own arrogance.

He fidgets with his hair a little, but eventually brings his index finger back to his lip.

"If I were L, I would be truly happy," he lies.

He, overall, is a lonely person. He was brought into Wammy's House because his parents abandoned him as an infant. They didn't even bother giving him a name. Not only did he not trust people, but he also pushed them away to avoid being abandoned. In a way, he was the reason he was so lonely.

"Same." you say, not knowing how else to respond.

He doesn't comment back, instead, you see him gazing at you. You start to get creeped out.

'Why's he staring at me like that?'

"Thank you ma'am." he says, eyes not moving away.

'Wait, is he talking to me? Thanks? What do--'

Your thoughts stop as you see him slip a cake-pop in his mouth. You turn to the side and see the waitress putting down his food and your coffee.

"Oh, thank you, ma'am!"

The waitress smiles, bows, and strides away. You look down, still uncomfortable with Hideki's wide eyes still on you. Suddenly, your impulsive side kicks in.

"Okay, why are you staring at me?"

Hideki meets his eyes to yours, and you realize-

'Oh god, he wasn't staring at me... Why am I like this?'

"I was looking behind you, sorry, I was lost in thought." he says, bringing another cake-pop to his lips.

He swirls it around in his mouth, takes it back out, then viciously bites off the cake part. He then takes the bowl of sugar cubes and dumps at least 15 of them in the small coffee cup, making them stack well over the top of the cup. He holds one sugar cube high above his head, hanging only by his thumb and index finger, and drops it in his mouth.

You gawk at him, wondering what the hell he's thinking when he does that. He takes another cake-pop, twirls it in his sugar-filled coffee cup, and sucks off the cake part that's soaked in coffee.

His gaze comes back to you.

"Okay, why are you staring at me," he mocks.

A normal person would write this comment off as an insult, but you see past the rudeness and genuinely laugh at his dry joke.

L stops eating.

'She understood my joke? People don't understand my jokes. This girl," he ponders in awe, continuing to eat.

'She's brilliant, talented in music, has personality, and even understands my jokes,' he shoves three cake-pops in his mouth at once.

"I might actually fall for you," he mumbles halfheartedly between the chews, not completely convinced with the idea.

"You might fall off what," you ask, not hearing him right.

"Oh nothing," he says clearer and proceeding to swallow.

"Are you going to drink your coffee?" he asks, pointing to it with another cake-pop.

"Yeah, I like to wait for it to cool for a bit, then I chug it."

"That's quite odd." he says, drinking his coffee, with about half of the sugar dissolved.

You laugh at the irony in his statement, then proceed to chug your coffee as promised. L eats the last of his cake-pops and decides to contemplate the girl.

'You are an interesting person... Now that I look at you again, I realize you, on top of everything else, are beautiful, too. Is this a crush? Maybe it's lust...'

You put the cup down, and take a deep breath of air.

"Well, I'm gonna start heading home. It was nice talking to you! We can talk tomorrow after calculus if you want." you say, standing up.

"Yes, that would be nice," he says, looking into his empty cup.

You smile and pat his head as you walk out. His cheeks turn scarlet and his neutral lips, curve up into a sweet smile.

''Maybe it's not just a crush..."
