5 - Sympathetic Hearts

"Watari, I need surveillance cameras and bugs in (Y/N)'s house as soon as possible." he states as he walks through the hotel door, immediately crouching in his chair and taking out his MacBook.

"Yes, L," he bows and calls the same people who put up the cameras in the Yagami household. L types swiftly on his computer for thirty seconds and calls out to Watari again, "Watari, can you get them up before she gets home today?"

"Only if we install one camera and bug, yes."

"That's fine, just make it quick."

"Yes, L." L's hands glide across the keys effortlessly.

'I need their phone numbers and,' he thinks, now pulling out a new phone, thumbs moving across it now.

'This footage,' his hands moved back and forth, to and from the phone and computer.

'I got it,' he thinks, his plan working perfectly so far. He now finishes hooking up his computer with the new surveillance cameras placed in your room. He leans closer to the computer, observing your room, moving a thumb around on his bottom lip.

'The chance of you loving me, (Y/N), will be much higher once you realize you can't see Light Yagami anymore.'

You take your time in walking home, and think about Hideki, 'I kind of feel bad for him, but Light still has my heart. And anyway, Hideki is a little bit too odd.' Your mind starts to wonder back to Light as you enter your house. You lay on top of your bed.

'He can't be dead, there's no way. He will turn up soon, and when he does, I'll confess my love.' You start to imagine the different scenarios of what will happen once he comes home. You sigh and look up at the ceiling.

"God, if you're real, let me see Light one more time..." Just as you say that you get a text. It is a video, sent from Light Yagami. Your whole body shoots up, and you quickly play the video. However, the video seems to be surveillance footage of a room with wooden walls, a blue curtain, and a red square on the middle of the floor. You see a man walk up to the red square, with another man behind him, proceeding to place and tighten a noose around the other's neck. The cameras switch, and you are now looking at him on the other side of the curtain. Light Yagami. He stood there looking completely and utterly terrified with the noose around his neck. You see every detail of his face. You watch with wide eyes, still not knowing what to think.

Then the floor drops and Light follows.

Your face goes pale.

'This...this can't be real...this is a fake,' you desperately scream in your head.

You watch the video over and over again and, despite your denials, you know it isn't fake. Light Yagami is dead. He was executed, for the only reason you know that could possibly be true.

'Light Yagami...so you were Kira...' you whisper, tears slowly peaking in your eyes. L looks at his screen thoughtfully.

"Yes, he was Kira, and now he's dead. So what are you going to do now, (Y/N)," L asks himself.

You sniff and rub your puffy eyes when a new question enters your mind.

"So this means...Hideki Ryuga is L," you mumble, thoughts rushing once more, in and out of your head.

'It was a lie. Hideki lied. He lied over and over and over again. And...I actually fell for it...'

A specific set of words he said play in your head.

"Light was a fun, kind, hardworking student. He was the only friend I ever had. This man definitely couldn't have been the monster that was Kira."

Your thoughts are spinning your world and everything you thought you knew completely upside down. Your sobs slowly turn into hysterical laughter. This makes L flinch, then he relaxes.

'I shouldn't be surprised, the pieces of the puzzle are being placed in her head. She's figuring everything out,' he states, leaning closer.

'She is, after all, an extremely intelligent woman...' he gawks.

You gather yourself, trying to take in everything.

'Then who sent the video,' you ponder, cleaning yourself up.

'Hideki Ryuga. L.'

You smile, knowing exactly what needs to be done.

"She's got a plan." L whispers, smiling wide, excited to see what his fascination has in stored for him.

You walk to school knowing exactly what you're going to do.

'Ryuga is L, that much I'm sure of. However, I can't let him know I know that information. In order for me to test to him, to see if he was the one who sent me the video, I have to act distressed. I have to act how I acted yesterday.' You walk into class later than usual, seeing L in his regular back row, dumping a bag of M&M's in his mouth. To his surprise, you sit by him, and start your act.

"Hideki, someone stole Light's phone yesterday and send me a terrible video...I think Light is dead," you panic.

L immediately starts to choke on M&M's he is binge eating.

"Light is dead," he says with wide eyes, now looking right into your terrified ones.

You nod and start to show him the video.

He looks truly, visibly shocked. His hands start shaking, his eyes pop out of his head, and he gasps when he sees Light drop.

He looks at you with genuine concern in his eyes.

"(Y/N)...you know what this means, right?"

You nod, "Yes, it means Light was executed for being Kira. It's the only logical explanation."

"That's what I'm thinking too. This also, on top of everything else, means that he was lying," he says with concern.

He puts his thumb to his lip, and looks down, appearing deep in thought, eyes growing melancholy.

"Does this mean our friendship was a lie," he successfully bluffs with sorrow in his voice. You are somewhat shocked with the amount of emotion he is showing. His face is showing the expressions that a normal person would make when a dear friend betrays him. Once again, his acting, his deception is so convincing, that you can't help it.

You can't help but believe he's telling the truth. This frustrates you, so much so, that your impulsive nature comes back to lash out at Hideki.

"Hideki, you are L, you have to be!" you think out loud.

He smirks in his head.

'This is my chance to get her.'

He looks up at her and their eyes meet. She sees true sorrow in his eyes.

He coldly, quietly snaps, "How could you be joking right now? I thought you said you liked Light. He's dead now. Not only that, but everything we knew about him was an act. That persona he played was the person you fell in love with."

His words hit you like a brick. You think about it as class starts, ignoring the professor.

'He's right... The person I fell in love with was Kira. A liar. A deceiver. He could have even used me in the future for his personal gain.'

You look over at Hideki.

His elbows are propped up on his knees and his fingertips on his forehead.

'He looks so...frustrated...'

You see tears well up in his eyes, and you start to panic. In frantic efforts to keep him from crying, you write something on your notebook and show it to him.

It reads, "Hey, I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to lash out like that. I'm here for you."

L reads it, making his internal smirk grow.

'Checkmate.'
