I couldn't stop looking at him. The boy my family and I had met at dinner then at the lantern ceremony. He was so cute, and funny and smart of course. He had said his name was Lucas, Lucas Bennet. I observed from afar as him, his two brothers and their father played in the pool. I watched as the ball got thrown out of the pool and Lucas followed it. Thats when things got weird. Tens of birds flew above us, screams were heard from miles around, trees collapsing... then the wave came. A big huge wall of water, of residue coming straight for me and the people around me. I couldn't move, my whole body was frozen with horror. Then the water hit, and everything went black...
I sat up, erupting in fits of screaming and coughing. My whole body aching as if I'd been thrown around the place, which I had. I looked around the tent that was filled with hundreds of kids my age, younger and older. I searched the crowd of faces for anyone I knew, my brother, my sisters... anyone. That's when I saw him, Lucas, sitting with his back against a pole staring at his beaten hands. "Lucas?" I whisper, then slowly get to my feet. He looks up, his eyes widening. He scrambles to his feet and runs over to me. "Y/n, are you okay? When did you get here?" He asks hugging me "not... not too long ago, I-I can't believe you're okay" I gasp, tears threatened my bloodshot eyes for the hundredth time that day. This time he hugs me tighter, more securely. But I couldn't help it I started to bawl into his shoulder. "I can't find them, my family, my mother and father, my sisters and little Tom, they're gone, they're all gone" I blubber, crumbling to the ground in a horrible mess of tears and snot. I didn't care about the looks I was getting, all I cared about was being at home with my family. Lucas pulled me close to his chest, cradling me like a baby and softly whispering to me "you're okay, you're family is out there I know it" as he brushed pieces of loose hair from my face. "I'm sorry" I whisper "what for?" He asks "not telling you that I liked you sooner" I frown, then close my eyes and fall asleep in his arms. One year later
I never found my family. They had all died in the tsunami and everyday I think of them. I now live with one of Lucas' neighbors as she was adopting. Everyday after the disaster Lucas and I had been inseparable. He helped me settle in at school, to make new friends, to be happy. Of course over the past year my feelings for Lucas had grown immensely, but I would never tell him for the fear I would ruin our friendship. I knock on his houses big red door and take a step back. His mother greets me with a large hug and kiss on the cheek. "He's up in his room, he's got a surprise for you" she smiles. A surprise? I thought, then ran up the stairs to his room. I slowly open his door to reveal him and his two brothers, who were holding up a banner, all standing facing me. My cheeks went hot as the silence filled the room. Then I read the banner:Y/N
It's been one year since you told me you liked me, now it's my turn to tell you I love you...
