Adelaide never found Anne. The girl had searched the woods forever, but finally came to the realization that Anne had gone home, which Adelaide did not know the whereabouts of.

She had gone home, and simply told her mother that she felt sick and came home early, and she would be going back tomorrow.

It wasn't a lie, she would be going back. A little argument with a teacher never stopped her before. Besides, it's not like she could change schools again.

Adelaide had gone to her favorite place in the world, the hay loft in her barn. She would often read books there, as she was doing at the moment.

As Adelaide's eyes skimmed over the words, she heard the barn door creak open. She turned to the goat next to her and widened her eyes. He stared back and made a small noise, as if he was also afraid. She quietly got up and crept towards the door, wanting to see who was there. Her mother never stepped foot in this barn, so who could it be?

"Adelaide." Someone said and Adelaide jumped out of her skin, yelping. She turned around and glared at the person standing there: Gilbert Blythe.

"What are you doing here?" Adelaide hissed at him, sliding the barn door open to shed light.

"Mr. Phillips said I had to bring your books, and he wouldn't let Diana do it." Gilbert explained.

"You walked all this way for me- wait how did you know where I lived? That is creepy!" Adelaide laughed. He laughed along with her, saying that Mr. Phillips had told him.

"Does he not think I am coming back?" She asked him and twiddled her fingers.

"Nobody thinks your coming back. I mean, what you did was crazy." Gilbert replied.

"Well, it wasn't the worst thing I have done at school, I'll be there tomorrow." Adelaide said and grabbed a bucket, since it was almost time to milk the cow.

"I'm glad you're coming back." He said. She just smiled and they stood like that for a few moments, staring into each other's eyes. A cow mooed, bringing them out of the trance.

"Well, uh, I have to-" Adelaide started.

"Oh, yeah, I need to go." Gilbert gave an awkward smile.

"Thank you for bringing my stuff. It, um, it means a lot." Adelaide flashed a smile, and he started out the barn door.

"Wait, Gilbert!" Adelaide yelled, prompting him to stop in his tracks. He turned around and looked at the blonde girl once more.

"Please, do not talk to me at school. I already got in trouble with the girls; I mean I don't care what they think, but I just thought I would actually be kind for once and let Ruby have dibs or whatever." Adelaide rambled on to him. His eyes crinkled at the corner when he laughed at what she had said.

"Dibs?" He questioned, laughing again.

"Is that all that you got out of what I said?" Adelaide rolled her eyes and asked him. He put his hands up in defense and slowly started backing out of the barn once again.

"No, no. I'll try not to talk to you, even though it will be hard!" Gilbert yelled the last part, and disappeared out of Adelaide's sight. She let out a breathy laugh and put on an apron, deciding she needed to finish her chores so she could get a good night of sleep.
