"no offense, but i think we're all a little busy. what's up with the family meeting?" jacob placed his phone on the table, face down.
jack scoffed. "it's nice to know that i have such respectful kids." he turned to face my mom, and buried his head in his hands. "would you like to do the honors, halle?"
she smoothed out her skirt, and crossed her legs. "it seems like there's been a lot of tension between all of you, lately."
jacob and i immediately looked at each other, and tried our hardest not to laugh.
on the other hand, arielle didn't find the situation to be humorous. she tightened her slick ponytail, and crossed her arms. "i don't understand how you two find my pain to be funny."
what?
jacob was visibly just as confused as i was. "elle, who said anything about you being in pain? also, is it a crime for me to laugh with my sister?"
mom and jake didn't interfere, they were just sitting back and enjoying the drama.
arielle turned to face me. "see, that's one of the problems i have with you. you just love to barge into people's lives, and ruin their plans. god, camila. i love your mom, but i really wish that she didn't have to bring you with her."
ouch.
even though i didn't really like arielle, it still hurt to hear those words come out of her mouth.
mom, jake, and jacob all looked displeased.
jake shook his head, and picked up his glass of water. "i didn't raise you to be like this, arielle." he took a sip of the water, placed it on top of a coaster. "we have all been living together for about two years now. you haven't even tried to make camila feel comfortable, i've never even seen you try. i'm really disappointed in you, and i hope that you'll at least apologize to her."
arielle threw her hands up. "you always play favorites, dad. ever since camila and her mom moved in, you've been acting as if you were her real dad." she rolled her eyes. "i don't know if you've noticed, but she isn't your blood child. i'm your blood child, dad. you know what really sucks, though? everybody is obsessed with camila, they can't get enough of camila. i don't really see the appeal, but that's just me."
my original plan was to simply sit and listen, but i obviously couldn't do that anymore.
"listen, arielle. most of the time, i feel like i can't ever compare to you. you're a genius, and you're the student body president." i crossed my arms, and laughed bitterly. "it's really a shame, arielle. you're so pretty and smart, but you let jealousy ruin you. you need an attitude adjustment, immediately."
jacob picked some lint off of his sweatshirt, and shrugged. "she has a point, elle. you're kind of a monster."
my mom choked on her water.
jack took a long sip of his water, to avoid having to voice his opinions.
arielle blinked a few times, and buried her face in her hands. "god, this is so messed up. i didn't even think that you liked camila, jacob."
well then.
jacob squinted. "i never said that i didn't like camila. i obviously do like camila, even though i do give her a hard time occasionally. that's what a brother is supposed to do, arielle. you really need to get over yourself."
arielle chuckled lowly. "you're all ridiculous. i have no idea why you all love camila so much, honestly. she's awful at the easiest subjects, she never showcases how smart she is, and she..." arielle hesitated for a few seconds. "she's a slut. she's nowhere near as innocent as you all think she is. i guess that i should give her a pass though, since she never had a father figure in her life until dad came around–"
my blood was boiling, and i couldn't control myself. i snatched my glass of ice water off of the table, and splashed it in arielle's face. "you're awful." i dropped the glass in her lap, and turned around. "jake, jacob... i'm so sorry that you had to deal with that by yourselves for so long. just remember, there's no use in trying to help a lost cause."
