The next day, Alex was acting strangely as if she had a virus. I checked her wound and it was infected so I took the gauze off and reapplied hydrogen peroxide to it and put fresh gauze on it. I asked Frank if he had any form of sled or something to put Alex in so we can transport her to Gregs and hope he can help. Frank didn't have anything so we made a stretcher out of curtains and planks of wood from the surrounding area.
We left for Gregs with Katie in front, me and Frank right behind her holding Alex on the stretcher.
"Alright don't try to run," I said.
As soon as we got about ten feet from the house Katie made a run for it and I set Alex's feet down, grabbed my sidearm, and fired a couple shots. Katie stopped and yelled back "Don't shoot, don't shoot!"
We got to a checkpoint, but the people there didn't seem like they were from the city. We proceeded and they told us to stop and state our business.
"My name is Allen Ernest, I'm looking for Greg Anderson," I said.
"Why are you looking for Greg?" A voice answered.
"I'm looking for his help and we need medical attention," I replied.
"Alright, you may enter." The same voice answered.
When we got to the checkpoint someone approached us and said...
"Hi, my name is Greg. You said you need medical attention?" Greg asked.
"Yes," I replied. "It's Alex, she has an infection."
"We have medicine and antibiotics that will help her recover." He replied
Greg ushered us to a hospital looking building, had us put Alex in a room, and then they brought in fresh bandages, medicine, and antibiotics.
"Do you have a place we can put Katie?" I asked.
"Yes," Greg answered. "There is the old jail."
"That's perfect," I said
He then showed us to the jail and we put Katie in one of the cells.
"So, why me?" Greg asked
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Out of everyone out there, you asked me for help." He replied. "Why me?"
"I'm looking for the people in my fathers' address book," I replied. "My parents are being held captive by the military officers who operate under the Emporer and I will only ask you this once, will you help me free my parents liberate the people of the city?
"I... Will," Greg answered. "I knew the kind of work your father did and in the wrong hands it would be devastating."
"Good," I said.
"What do you call this group I just joined?" Greg asked.
"I haven't really thought about what to call it," I replied. "How about The Beginning of the End?"
"Sounds good to me," Greg said.
"Yeah, it's great for us," Frank said.
A few days later Alex was looking a lot better and could stand on her own.
"How do you feel?" I asked.
"Better than a couple days ago," Alex replied.
"That's good," I said. "Is it ok if I ask you a couple of questions?
"Go ahead." She replied.
"Do you know who I am?" I asked.
"Allen Ernest." She answered.
"And what am I to yo..." I got cut off by the pain that started in my shoulder and passed out from the pain.
"Allen!!" Alex screamed.
Greg and Frank ran in with some other guards.
"Move away from that window there's a sniper," Frank said.
"What now," Greg asked.
"Don't worry, he isn't dead it is a method police used to disarm a potential threat," Frank said.
The people that nursed Alex, got me on a bed, removed the bullet, and patched the wound.
"Wait, can I see that bullet?" Frank asked.
They handed him the bullet and his heart skipped a beat.
"It's a .308 chaser round fired from a suppressed sniper rifle," Frank said. "He is lucky the bullet didn't move a millimeter in either direction."
"Why do you say that?" Alex asked.
"Because at almost the speed of sound it can shatter bones into a million pieces, causing more damage than this," Frank replied.
