Krani set her tray down and sat down by it. There was only an alien Jedi Knight and a human Padawan talking together in the room. She couldn't recall having seen either before. When the Padawan looked at her, she dropped her gaze to the tray Just then a hand tapped her. She spun around. Behind her stood Garma.
"Hey, Krani."
"Hi, Garma. How'd your meeting go?"
"It went well, I guess." He sat down. "He was obviously distracted."
"Well, he is a full Jedi. They've got a lot more to think about."
Garma shrugged. "I wish a Jedi would choose me. It feels awful to know you look like a good Padawan, but when they get to know you they see that something's missing."
Krani put her hand on his sympathetically. "I'm sorry. I never thought about it that way."
Garma shrugged. "I'm okay with it. The Force tells me I'll get a really good Master someday."
Krani nodded and turned back to her food. Her chain fell from her shoulder to dangle on her chest. Garma noticed and reached out to touch it. "Hey, Krani. What's this?"
Her hand rose almost of its own accord to touch the chain. "Somehow in our practice this morning my braid was cut."
Garma sat back, shocked. "Really? What's going to happen to you?"
Krani shrugged, trying to remain calm. "I talked to Master Yoda and he said because it was an accident, nothing should change. He said I could get a substitute braid until mine grows back."
"So you chose an iron chain?"
"Yeah. It's cool, don't you think?"
"The real one was better." They nodded in agreement and Krani continued with her meal.
