Blackpaw got back to camp, and what surprised her was Blazepaw talking to Berrykit.
She padded up, alarmed. "What's going on?" She demanded, hoping they weren't fighting.
Blazepaw had a mouse at her feet.
"Oh hi Blackpaw. Berrykit just gave me this mouse." She mewed.
Blackpaw shot a suspicious glance at Berrykit, but all she could see was happiness in her gaze.
She let out a purr and rubbed her head against her sisters. "I knew you would come to your senses soon. Want to eat with us?" She said.
Berrykit shook her head. "Sorry, I've promised I'd eat with Starlingpaw and Saplingpaw." She pointed her nose to the two sisters, who waved their tails beckoning her.
"I've got to go. Bye!" Berrykit called happily.
Blackpaw looked at Blazepaw, who didn't eat yet. "Well, why aren't you eating?" She asked.
Blazepaw flicked her tail. "I'm waiting for you to get prey."
She rolled her eyes and chose her fat pigeon and a mouse.
She padded up to Blazepaw. "I'll be back." She mumbled through a mouthful of prey.
She walked over to the elders who were sunning themselves. She dropped the pigeon. "Do you want the mouse too?" She asked politely.
Rayclaw jumped and looked at the pigeon. "Why thank you Blackpaw. Yes, the pigeon will be enough for us. You've turned out to be a fine apprentice." Rayclaw nodded to her and hooked the pigeon with his claws and turned to Mousetail.
She turned and walked to the nursery, where Berrykit, Starlingpaw, and Saplingpaw sat close to.
She ducked in and saw Applenose and Brandy talking.
"Hi, Blackpaw. How's Blazepaw?" Brandy said, lifting her head.
"Blazepaw is fine, waiting for me to move my fluffy rump so we can eat together." She said with a smile.
Applenose chuckled, her kits walking blindly around her.
She dropped the mouse near them. "Is this enough?" She asked Applenose. The queen nodded and thanked her, and she exited the nursery.
She saw Longscar walk towards her.
She looked up. "Hi."
Longscar nodded to her. "You're turning into a great apprentice. Good job giving the elders and queens food."
She felt pleased to be praised by the deputy, and she bounced over to the fresh kill pile and picked out a thrush. She went over to Blazepaw.
"Finally!" Her friend mewed, as she sat down with her prey.
Blackpaw laughed. "I was only being a good apprentice." And she dug through her thrush.
She saw Blazepaw do the same to her mouse, and she saw her stop chewing.
"Blazepaw?" She said, seeing her friend have panic in her eyes.
She started to choke, spitting out the mouse. She got to her paws, coughing and wheezing.
Blackpaw got to her paws, looking at the mouse.
She saw with dismay there was red berries stuffed in the mouse. A flashback took her away.
She and Berrykit had gotten out of camp and found red berries. She was about to take a bite when Sunsettail came out of nowhere and scolded them and told them they were...
"Death berries!" She shrieked. "Someone poisoned Blazepaw!" She bellowed as loud as she could, making every cat jump.
She saw Berrykit and the sisters laughing near the nursery
They poisoned her!
Maplepatch pushed through the entrance of the medicine den, with multiple herbs in her mouth and raced toward Blazepaw who was still choking, but had collapsed and coughed up tiny bits of berry.
Maplepatch shoved a leaf in Blackpaw's mouth. "Chew! Make it a paste!" She ordered.
She started chewing frantically, and spat it out.
Maplepatch dapped her paw in the paste and put some of it down Blazepaw's throat, messaging her throat to make her swallow.
Soon after Blazepaw started throwing up, retching bits of mouse and chewed up berries.
Blackpaw had to look away to stop herself from throwing up as well, and she saw Berrykit smirking at her from the nursery.
Rage boiled inside her like nothing else and she stood up stiffly, padding toward her.
"Can I have a word with you?" She asked Berrykit. She nodded smugly.
They padded out into the forest, and she headed for the Cavernclan border.
"Why did you poison Blazepaw?" She growled, pausing at the Cavernclan scentline.
"Why, so you would see I am here and I should be the focus of your attention, of course." Berrykit said.
"You could have killed her!" She snapped, passing the scentline. She heard Berrykit follow her.
"So?" Berrykit said once they stopped by a river.
"So?!" Blackpaw was outraged.
She threw herself at Berrykit, remembering the moves Rattlesnake taught her.
Berrykit gasped in pain as she bit on her haunch, spewing blood. She felt tiny sharp claws rake the side of her face, and she growled and balanced on one foot, using her front forepaws to batter her face, and her single free back leg to knock her legs underneath her.
Berrykit fell to the ground and she leapt at her, but her sister rolled out of the way and leapt on her back.
She hissed in anger and rolled away, unbalancing Berrykit and rolled down the hill.
She got up and shook her pelt, and she realized Berrykit was gone.
Then a force from above knocked her to the ground and she whirled, using her back legs to kick Berrykits underbelly.
She had reopened another wound and it splattered blood on her.
Berrykit gasped and rolled off, trying to stop herself from rolling off the hill again.
But she was going to fast and her claws caught Blackpaw's leg.
She growled and kicked Berrykit in the face, knocking her off.
Berrykit squealed and rolled off the hill, and into the flowing river.
She gasped and raced down the hill and looked into the river.
She saw Berrykits forelegs hanging onto the edge of the river, her head barely above the water.
"Help!" She gurgled.
Blackpaw gasped and raced for her paws, trying to save her. But Berrykit just lost her grip and tumbled into the water, carrying her limp body down the stream.
She let out a shriek and leapt down into the rocks, but her body was already long gone.
She wailed, memories flooding over her.
"Come on, Berrykit!" Blackkit called, racing after the butterflies. She heard her sister trampling behind her. She laughed with her sister as the leaves whirled around her.
After they were done, Berrykit nosed Blackkit. "You're the best sister ever!" She purred loudly.
She sobbed harder, and she soon heard pawsteps.
She turned and saw a cavernclan apprentice and mentor.
"What are you doing on our territory?" The mentor asked.
Her only reply was a weak sob, collapsing on the rocks with blood staining them.
