I absolutely couldn't fall asleep. I forced myself up, and grabbed my pillow. I slowly walked past all of the cells on the right side.I looked at everyone asleep. "Carter?" a voice asked. All I could see was the outline of the person coming towards me. I started walking to the person, and realized it was Maggie.
"How's Glenn?" I asked. "Not so good." she replied. "I'm so sorry Maggie." I said with a sad look on my face.
"Maybe love isn't something we can have now. I spend so much of my time thinking about Glenn, that I'm not concentrating on the task at hand. We can be fighting off walkers, and he's what I'm focused on." She said in a sweet voice, almost like Beth's.
"Oh." was all I said. "I guess you're too young to understand." she softly said.
"Or maybe I'm not.""What do you mean?" she asked. "promise not to tell anyone?" I asked while holding out my pinkie. "Promise." she replied with wrapping her pinkie around mine.
"Well you see... I really like Carl. But I don't think he likes me back. He just thinks of me as a friend. Maybe not even a friend. I'm just another random person in the group, that he has to risk his life for. I could get him killed. I think he feels as if he needs to protect the group, so he's always putting himself out there. He risks his life for ours, and there's not much we can do about it. It's just the way he is." I said.
"You know how you said that you could get him killed because he risks his life for you?" she asked. "yeah" I replied. "If he didn't like you, he wouldn't do it. You're the only person he does it for." she said.
"That's not true. He's done it for other people." I said while crossing my arms.
"Well if he does it for everyone, then who has he done it for?" she said while raising an eyebrow.I honestly never thought about it like that. We both sat there in a peaceful silence. I wasn't an awkward silence, but it was enjoyable.
"Maggie isn't wrong." a voice said while walking out of their cell. I looked up and saw Carl. "You heard all of that...." I said awkwardly.
"Yeah, I did..." he said. Heat rushed to my cheeks. I gave him a crooked smile, and turned around, too embarrassed to face him. He put a hand on my shoulder, just as he did when we went on the supply run.
"I only 'put myself out there' because I care. I've probably been thinking the same thoughts you have. I truly, truly like you Carter. I agree, this may not be a world full of love, but it certainly isn't a world filled with people only hating each other." He said.
I reached over to give him a hug, and then I whispered in his ear. "Can we have a sleepover?" I asked. "Why not..." he said while letting out a quiet chuckle.
I was about to say thank you to Maggie for helping me with my boy drama, but she wasn't there. I shrugged and walked off to Carl's cell.
"I haven't had a sleepover for the longest time..." I said. "I never really had sleepovers." he replied.
"Tell me about yourself." I said. "what was your life like before the 'apocalypse'?" I asked.
"If you tell me what your life was like, I'll tell you about my life." he replied. I nodded in agreement and cleared my throat.
"I'll tell you the basic things first." I said. He nodded, and I continued to talk. "I was born in Massachusetts, but grew up in Georgia. My mother's name was Theresa, and my father's name was Thomas. I had a baby brother named Connor, and I only knew him for a few months before the apocalypse.
My favorite food used to be chicken pot pie, and I loved grapes. I've always wanted a dog, but I have had a horse. When the outbreak happened, I was with my aunt. It was 'bring your kid to work day' and my aunt bought me because she didn't have kids. We got in the car, but then we had to take a stop. She and I were at a gas station.
She got out of the car, and a few walkers tackled her. I listened to the radio, and I covered myself with a jacket so they wouldn't see me. I was reaching out to change the radio station, and then one of the walkers saw my arm.
I immediately pulled it back, and it looked away. The person talking on the radio was saying stuff about the outbreak. They were also talking about survival groups. I realized that my aunt was dead. I thought I was dreaming.
I was a little kid at the time, so I didn't know what to do. I stayed in the car for the night, and opened the car door every once and a while so I could breathe. The next morning, I saw a man.
I looked a little more closely and realized it was my dad. He wrapped me in a hug, and then shot down a walker. my mom stood at his side, and they tried to take on the walkers that were wandering around.
One of them got my mom. I watched as the walkers ate her up. My dad was still fighting, but all I did was cry." I said.
"I'm so sorry." he said. "Don't be." I replied. "Can I tell you my story tomorrow? I'm really tired." he said while yawning.
He laid down on his bed, and I laid on the top bunk. "Night." he said. "Goodnight." I whispered before drifting off to sleep.
