Chapter 2
~~~~~~~
Batting my eyes open a few more times, I fully become aware in mental clarity. I yawn as I stretch out my arms and sit upwards.
We've arrived at the place where Nico and Triana instructed us to ditch the van before we begin flying. We reached this place last night and decided to sleep in the van rather than fly at night.
I slept in the corner with Lana in the opposite side of the van.
You think I'd lay with her but in my nightmares I kick and yell aggressively. Junior even left the van in the middle of the night and slept outside with Wy who knows better.
I feel guilty but I can't help it.
"Morning." I test to see if she's awake with a greeting.
I'm answered with a yawn and the stretch of a pale arm. "Rough night?"
"I guess. I'm just glad I was able to sleep."
"Good."
"How are you feeling?"
Lana's eyes open and the striking blue pierces through her plain features. "Starving. We need to eat, I don't think flying on empty stomachs would be good."
I nod in agreement and reach for my bag. Inside I have my lone throwing knife with the slightest hints of dried blood on it.
It was him or me, I remind myself though the thought of it doesn't subside.
I shove it in the waistband of my sweatpants with my bag around my shoulders and stand to get out of the car. Lana tells me she'll help Wy start a fire.
Sliding open the van door, I see Junior slump from his right side to the dried grass floor of this forest field. I hop over him as he groans while shaking his head. His fault for sleeping agaisnt the door.
With his hands still wrapped around his forehead, Wy says to him, "Looks like you've gotten ahead of yourself this morning."
Junior remains silent for awhile but them proceeds to lash a kick at his stomach. Wy falls back on the grass laughing. He helps him up and looks back at me with his stomach rumbling.
"I assume it's time to hunt." He says cautiously.
I nod and glance at Wy who catches my gaze. "You and Lana start a fire, I'll hunt and Junior will gather plants and shit."
Wy nods as Lana steps out of the van. Her red hair lays in knots wildly and her gray tank top looks like it could use a wash. She offers a smile which I return before going with Junior deeper into the woods.
We split up and I embrace being able to transform freely in this country. I kick off my shoes and turn.
With my wings out, I take off into flight above the trees, searching for game. The feeling of absolute freedom, of flying and not worrying if your life will be taken because of it is amazing. I want to spend the rest of my life here, I at least hope after I fulfill my role in this that I can live out here.
I watch carefully for any movement and notice a long throng of squirrels hopping aimlessly from branch to branch. I nose dive and land carefully on a patch of dried grass. I take out my throwing knife from my waistband and scan my eyes for squirrels.
They may not have that much meat on them but it's better than nothing.
Plus the flight to the black wings should alllow us to arrive during when dinner would usually be eaten so we'll get food later.
