Song: Sparks Fly by Taylor Swift

Chapter 1

I rolled my eyes, placing my hands on ether side of my mother's tired face, "For the last time, woman. I'm not a child anymore." I drawled slowly as I looked into her green eyes, "I know you and dad tried for the longest time to make it work, but now it's your turn to be happy."

She rested her cold skinny hands over mine, showing me a small quiver of a smile. "He is quite lovely..." she spoke cautiously, her eyes lighting up at just the thought of him.

"I'm sure I'll love him." I promised, wrapping my arms around her frail shoulders. "It's been three years since you and dad separated—you're allowed to fall in love again."

She exhaled loudly before I pulled back and showed her a goofy smile that had been our thing for as long as I remembered. Serious conversations always ended in laughs.

She chuckled and tilted her head, her green eyes beaming with pride. "I love you, Sammy. I know you're no longer a child but you'll always be my baby."

Rolling my eyes for the second time I turned around, scoffing at her cheesiness. "Call David back and tell him yes."

"Only if you call Beckett..." She hummed cheekily, being a shit-disturber.

My jaw tightened as my hands balled into fists at his name. "I told you; I'm done with him. He doesn't listen to me. All he thinks about is what he wants—"

"Honey, you realize you are 'breaking up' with him—" I could basically hear her quoting the word, as if it wasn't permanent this time (I swore to myself it was.) "—because he loves you, right?" She sighed as I grabbed the packed boxes from my truck with a huff.

I shook my head, walking towards the painted bright yellow door. "He doesn't listen. I told him so many times I wasn't looking for something serious just yet." Struggling into the tiny house, I dropped my things on the couch.

My mother mumbled something under her breath before replying, "You guys have been dating since your sophomore year in high school—don't you think it's time to take it more seriously?" She sighed dramatically, "You broke his heart back then and he still gave you chance after chance."

I swallowed through the suddenly thickness of guilt in my mouth. "That wasn't my choice now was it? If he had any self-respect..." I couldn't finish the sentence.

Beckett had a huge heart. Maybe too big at times, but it wasn't a fetal flaw. I was the one with the fetal flaw.

"Forget it." I muttered, grabbing the next box angrily.

"He only asked you to move in." She reminded me as she watched me grumble frustratedly in the midst of unloading my stuff. "Your father proposed to me in my freshman year of college."

After dropping the box off in the house I turned to her with my hands on my hips, giving her a knowing look. "Don't act like it was a choice. You guys got lazy with birth control and here I am."

Her lips tipped up with amusement, "Greatest lazy outcome ever." She sung off-key before breathing out deeply and looking at me seriously, "If I didn't love your father, I wouldn't have said yes. I was scared but sometimes love is worth the risk... don't you think?"
