(Freight car)The morning felt ominous. The birds didn't make a sound, the air smelled stale and the sun somehow shone duller. It was as if nature had veiled herself from the misfortune about to be bestowed upon the realm.
Your limbs stretched to their limits as you walked out of your shared room, wearing one of Tony's t-shirts, of course. Last night had been....interesting. The closer you got to the kitchen, the clearer the sounds coming from it became.
"I can't believe you made cake instead of pie!" Definitely Dean.
"It's a muffin!" Sam? Oddly enough, Sam was the only one Dean connected with most on the team. Was it because he had the same name as his brother? No one knew for sure.
"They're the same thing!"
A gasp. "How could you?"
"Fine. I can eat cake." Dean sighed. You caught a glimpse at Wanda who was biting her lip to prevent herself from laughing in the midst of a very serious fight. But it could be better. Conjuring a blade, you held it at Dean's throat and pushed him against a wall. "The real Dean would never surrender to cake. Who are you and what have you done with Dean Winchester?"
Dean's eyes went wide with genuine fear and it wasn't until you broke out in laughter that he released the breath caught in his chest. "Very funny. Can you get that thing away from me?"
"What? What happened?" Sam ran in, gun cocked and loaded, which he put down when he sensed no danger,"The artificial intelligence told me Dean was in danger."
"Mr. Barton accused me of being a male genital when I didn't assist him in pranking Captain Rogers. I wanted to disprove that conception." FRIDAY announced. "Go FRIDAY!" You cheered.
Annoyed, Clint threw a toast at you which hit a certain stranger who mysteriously appeared in front of you. Interpreting the toast which hit his back as a potential threat, Castiel sent Clint flying into the dining furniture. "No, Cas, he's on our side!" You waved your hand, creating a wall of energy between the two men, relieving Clint of Cas' invisible grip.
"Oh, I'm... I'm terribly sorry." The angel turned his attention to you, "(Y/N), I felt a substantial fall in your usual energy. I came here to ensure your wellness. Is everything alright?" The room fell silent. Everyone's biggest fear was beginning to reify. "Everything is just fine." You swallowed a lump in your throat,"Listen, Cas, thank you.....for everything. You're a great friend and....I love you." You patted his shoulder. Yes, he deserved to know, but you couldn't bring yourself to do it. Maybe you were scared about nothing. Maybe everything would be just fine. Maybe.
Cas' eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "(Y/N) you're being wei-" And just like that, he was gone. Thanks to your powers, it would be hours before he'd remember where he was and what he was doing. Hours which would decide your fate. "Come on Buck, let's get this over with."
Before you could begin, Bucky turned around and took your hand in his, "Thank you for all of this. I have no idea how I will ever pay you back but for starters, I will take you out for cotton candy like we talked about the other day. See you after this, doll."
Would he? Would he see you after this? Tony's comforting nod helped you rid your mind of these thoughts and continue. It wasn't long before your grip on his temple began to loosen. The fact that you suddenly felt drained of all energy didn't orchestrate itself subtly. As your mind was canvassing the depths of his, realization hit you like a slap to the face - you really were not going to make it.
Bucky was mostly back to his old self. Everything you had done would amount to nil if he had to live with the guilt that it was because of him that you.... ceased to exist. Your throat produced a growl as you used your remaining energy into remaking Bucky's mind. He would remember the forties, the fall, his Winter Soldier life, everything; everything except you, that you ever met him, that you ever healed him.
Wanda let out an inhuman shriek and collapsed on her knees, pressing her hands to her ears. "Hey, hey, hey, what's wrong?" Clint rushed to her rescue. "I can read her mind." She squeezed her eyes shut, "MAKE IT STOP!" The walls encompassing your mind were the first to go down, the pain you had been carrying from Bucky's scarred mind and the mere complexity of yours had reduced Wanda to a wailing mess. Clint and Wilson hastily ushered her out of the room.
When you let go of Bucky, his unconscious form rolled over to one side of the couch and you morphed into your Winged form. The golden swirls around you were more fierce than ever, only, this time the transformation wasn't voluntary. You felt your knees buckle but Tony broke your fall and held you to his chest, while he himself settled on the floor. "He should wake up in an hour or so." You breathed out. "You did it, sweetheart." He stroked your hair.
"Tony." You fought your eyelids which threatened to close and he knew. He just knew. He put a finger to your lips, tethering to the illusion that if you wouldn't speak of it, it wouldn't happen. "Will you let me talk for once?" You laughed sadly, gently moving his finger. "Before I met you, I thought humans were these vile, greedy beings who did not deserve saving and you....you proved me right. And yet somehow, completely and utterly wrong." You coughed harshly, spraying blood all over Tony's shirt.
You raised a shaky hand to wipe it off but he took it and interlocked his fingers with you instead, placing soft kisses on the back of it every few seconds. Meanwhile, everyone in the room had collectively moved closer to the two of you. "You're a wonderful man, Tony. You deserve so much, and all I could give you is pain. I'm sorry." You said, tears cascading down your cheeks.
"That's the thing, (Y/N), you're the only one who sees it. I love you, it's not something I can control. You're in my mind and heart all the time. Before I met you, I was not familiar with the feeling of love. But now, that's all I know. My heart misses its beat when I come close to you." Tony fished a tiny velvet box out of his pocket and as most tiny velvet boxes do, this one contained a ring as well. "Will you marry me?" His eyes were wet too as he asked the question. The room filled with pin drop silence and anticipation. 'Tony and (Y/N). Forever.' was engraved on the inside of the ring; it certainly hadn't been produced on short notice. He had been thinking about it for quite some time.
"Tony...."
"No, no, no. Listen to me. I want this, okay. I know what I am doing." He assured. As much as you wanted to accept, this matrimony would last ten seconds, as would your life, but the look of hope on his stupid face did not allow you to refuse either. "Yes! Yes, Tony I will marry you!" You spoke as loud as your lungs let you.
Overwhelmed with joy, Tony grabbed the sides of your face and kissed you. Hard. Scared that you'd disappear if he ever let go. The gold mist around you continued to grow dense and when it cleared, it was just Tony sitting there, alone. The ring he had placed on your finger fell to the floor with a loud concentric clink.
Sam's hands glued to his mouth and Dean's body gave in, making him land on the couch he was standing next to. Natasha hugged Steve as firmly as she could, willing him to look away. All the while, Tony sat there, staring at his empty hands which held you only moments ago. And now they never would.
You were gone.
A/N: So that happened. Thank you for sticking around till the end!
Lots of love!
