The First Day

The blaring of his alarm clock woke up a nervous wreck of an Evan Hansen.

Today was the first day of school.

The first day of being a senior! Where he would rule the school in his very last year of High School!

Yeah right.

He rolled out of bed with a groan, his mom knocking on his door. She peeped her head in.

"Morning! How's my senior?"

He shrugged.

"Aw come on Evan! Cheer up! You're gonna do great!"

He rolled his eyes with a light smile on his face at his moms positivity.

"Thanks mom."

"How about you ask the other kids to sign your cast? That'll be a great icebreaker, think of all the friends you can make."

Unlikely.

But he smiled anyways and nodded.

"Yeah, good idea mom."

She handed him a sharpie from his nightstand, kissed his cheek, and walked out of the room.

"Now get a move on! You don't wanna be late, oh and don't forget to take your meds! You all good on refills?"

Evan nodded, swallowing the two small pills and washing them down with water.

"I'll see you downstairs."

He mumbled a response and his mother shut the door. Evan walked into his bathroom, staring at his appearance in the mirror. The appearance of the boy who nobody knew. The boy who had no friends. His mom said it was going to be a great year, but it wasn't. She was trying so hard to be optimistic for him, and Evan really appreciated it, but it just wasn't working. It was going to be another awful, uneventful school year of him sitting at home every Friday by himself, getting shoved around in the hallways, and anxiously stuttering over presentations.

He sighed, splashing his face with water. After brushing his teeth and hair, and washing his face, he put on simple khakis and a blue striped polo, and a pair of navy converse.

He had finally got new shoes, something he was happy about. He was also extremely happy that his mom had agreed to drive him to school this year.

"Oh, Evan honey? I'm really sorry but I have to get to work earlier than normal today. You're gonna have to take the bus."

Never mind.

Evan trudged down the stairs of their small home into the kitchen. His mom handed him his lunch.

"Mom, I can make my own lunches you know."

"I know, but it's the first day of school. I knew you'd be a little anxious so I just did it for you." She said, grabbing her shoes.

"Thanks mom." Evan smiled. "You didn't put a love note in it too, did you?" He joked.

"You'll have to see." She responded, kissing his forehead. "I have to go now, have a great day! I love you!"

"Love you too mom."

She waved at him and then left the house. Evan watched her car leave the driveway and go down the street until it was out of sight.

He poured himself a bowl of cereal and ate in silence, watching the minutes on the clock tick anxiously.

When it was time to leave, he swung his backpack over his shoulder and waited for the bus.

The ride to school was loud and uncomfortable. Everyone was talking and greeting all their friends. Catching up over what they did during the summer.
