The next day, Evan was sitting with Connor at lunch. He had made sure to bring him some snacks and Connor was extremely happy and...touched?
"You are literally the nicest person I've ever met." He had said with a laugh as Evan handed him a bag of chips and a brownie.
"Ok, what electives do you take?" Connor asked him, breaking a piece of his brownie off and popping it in his mouth.
"Environment sciences and AP Biology." Evan responded.
"Environmental Sciences?"
"I-It's like an advanced science course, but all nature related! I-I love science and trees."
"You like trees?" Connor asked, a light chuckle escaping his mouth.
"Um, yeah! I like learning about nature, trees in particular!"
"Huh." Connor looked out the back window. "So if I pointed to a tree, could you tell me what kind it was?"
"P-probably!" Evan said, excitement evident in his voice.
"Ok." Connor squinted out the window, pointing to a tree in the far back. "What's that?"
It took Evan approximately three seconds to answer.
"A Loblolly Pine."
Connor smiled at him.
"May I ask, why nature?"
Evan looked out the window blankly.
"It's calming. And always there. I've always been kind of lonely so I started to take interest in the things around me."
"That's cool." Connor responded. "Do you want to be a scientist or something?"
"A botanist. It's basically a plant scientist." Evan paused. "What electives are you taking?"
"Advanced painting and drawing, and French. My parents are making me take a language because the arts don't give as much credits as the other electives. I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do after high school though."
"Oh."
Evan looked down, unsure of what to say.
"D-do you like your art elective?"
"I actually love it. It's the one part of school I enjoy."
"Do you consider yourself good at art?"
Connor shrugged
"Well, I don't know. Not good enough to make a living out of it, so it's kind of pointless." He huffed grumpily.
"That's not necessarily true."
"It's what my fucking dad says." Connor groaned. "No artist actually does well! Do something reasonable!" He mocked his fathers voice and Evan giggled a bit.
He giggled.
He fucking giggled.
Oh my god. Evan felt his face go red and Connor smiled a bit.
"At least you don't snort?"
Evan laughed loudly. Having a friend was so wonderful. How had he gone this long without one?
---
"Holy shit." Jared spoke in a mix of shock and laughter. "You're friends with Connor Murphy? The Connor Murphy?"
"Y-yeah! I promise he's not that bad."
"Evan you don't know him that well."
"Well from what I've seen he's really friendly!"
