"Stop! She is not your punching bag!" Sam yelled as I was getting jumped on my way home from school.
"Sam, they can not hear you." I whimpered.
"Oh, she is talking to her imaginary friend again," Damon chuckled as he kicked my rib cage and left with his friends.
"I am sorry, I wish I could help like I used to," Sam says as he looks down to the ground.
"It's fine. I wish they knew that you were real."
"It's been years since I have been able to stop them."
I get home then run to my bedroom, I get out my first-aid kit. Sadly, getting beat up is normal for me. Damon got steel toe boots, therefore, I am severely bruised now. I cry as I clean up my bruises and scrapes. Sam wraps his arm around me.
"I know it has been, I am 16 now though. I should be able to stop them myself." I tell him as I place my hand on his knee.
"JULIANI!" My mother yells as she walks into the house.
"She is never this early!" I whisper yell at Sam.
"I know!" Sam responds.
"Coming!" I softly yell as I run down stairs with Sam a few steps behind.
"What happened baby?" She asks dropping her stuff and hugs me.
"I don't want to talk about it." I lie.
"I am going to call the school!" She tells me taking out her phone.
"NO! His whole gang will come after me!" I tell her.
"Gang?"
"He doesn't like me so, his whole gang hates me and if I cause him to get in trouble, I get in even more trouble."
"Why doesn't he like you? Are you part of a gang?"
"No, he just hates me because I am uh... strange."
"How is that?"
"I still have Sam...."
"Baby, this is not healthy."
"He is here, you just can't see him like I can."
"He is in heaven, we have talked about this."
"Mom, I told you he isn't in heaven yet."
"I am making an appointment for you to see your shrink."
I just run up to my room not saying another word, my whole life has been therapy, mental hospitals, and more therapy.
"I am not crazy, " I tell Sam.
"Eh, you are crazy in a good way.," He responds with a smirk.
I chuckle and then give him a hug.
"Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if you were still alive."
"Well, you certainly wouldn't be labeled as crazy, I would have graduated high school and be in college."
I lean on his shoulder and realize he is my only friend, but I wanted him to go.
"Sounds like an amazing experience," I tell him softly.
"Juli, what are you thinking?"
"If you weren't dead would we still be friends?"
"Um... We were friends before I died. "
"I meant like would we be this close."
"I don't know, well when I was alive our parents always joked one day we would get married. So, I'd say we might be pretty dang close."
"Well, you are my best friend/older brother thing now."
"Thing?"
I nod and chuckle.
"Well, I love being your thing then."
"Do you really think we would be dating?"
"Maybe, you aren't hideous and you're a really good person. Even though you are slightly crazy, but to be honest I enjoy being your big brother figure and I don't want it any other way."
He kisses my forehead as I shut my eyes and just imagine what things would be like if I had I tight enough grip. Why couldn't I have just had a better grip?
