Hwan learned quickly at a young age that not every body liked his parents. Nor for who they were or what they did, but for simply being together. For loving eachother and caring for Hwan like every other parent did. His parents love eachother like any regular heterosexual parents. The only difference was they were both men, deeming them "unqualified to have a child" because "they will taint the mind of the innocent" or something like that.
Like all important things in life, Hwan had to learn that the hard way. Infront of his kindergarten class aswell.
Father's day was approaching rapidly, meaning the students would be making little craft and gift for their parents to show off. Things to hang on the fridge or put into a frame, those kinds of crafts. The easiest one being making a card showing how much the child loved their father.
Hwan was happily drawing onto a piece of folded paper, the front cover reading "I LOVE YOU DADS" In rainbow alternating colors and smiley faces drawn in yellow around it. The inside cover was where the drawing was going to be and the little letter next to it. Hwan planned this out very well, since he only wanted the best for the people who deserved no less of that.
He sat at a table surrounded by other kids who were making their own gifts. Some were making a card like Hwan, others were simply drawing pictures, a minority were making bows to put on themselves saying "They are a gift to their dads anyways".
As Hwan tried his best drawing Kihyun and Hyunwoo, his peer beside him smiled widely and looked over to see his picture. "Woah Hwan! That looks super good. Can you draw my dad or me?" he asked with a gummy smile.
Hwan only laughed softly and shook his head. "But I don't know what he looks like." He said to the other, continuing his drawing.
"Well he's a tall man with a big belly and super hairy."
"You're dad sounds like a gorilla" Hwan said bluntly, being a child who didn't know what lying was yet.
It caused the whole table to erupt in a loud fit of laughter. Someone banged on the table, causing Hwan to groan cause he was trying to focus on his picture. Once again, someone decided to talk to him and Hwan quickly realized how much he didn't like talking.
"You're funny Hwan~" someone beside him said. He too leaned over to look at the boy's drawing, seeing two male figures happily holding hands with a heart above them. There was a poorly drawn rainbow and flowers in the picture too, but in kindergarten standards it was impressive. "Oh Hwan, you drew yourself too big."
Hwan looked at his drawing, raising a brow. "That's not me, that's my dad."
"Then who's that with the brown hair? I know your dad has pink hair." The boy said, pointing at the two people drawn on the paper. Hwan bit his lip, afraid to answer. He remembered the incident with Eunseo and how badly he felt afterwards. He remembered how much disgust was shown on her face and how easily she told him having gay parents were wrong.
"T-Thats..." Hwan gulped, looking down and slowly cringing into myself, "That's my d-dad too..." He said, voice barely above a whisper. He wondered if anyone could've heard him. A part of him hoped they didn't, knowing they would leave him if they did. And he was right.
There was whispering among them, a few weird glances as Hwan as he looked down. He gripped the brown crayon tightly in his small fist, unable to bear the uncomfortable silence. He stood up, grabbing his paper and box of crayons to move himself away from the group. There was a small empty table in the far corner for students who did wrong, so Hwan over there. He sat himself down, getting comfortable and continuing his drawing there, head hanging low.
The class continued as it usually did, loud laughter and squealing from all tables except Hwans, who stayed alone as he worked on the details in his fathers' shirts. They all ignored him as if he wasn't even there, and sometimes Hwan thought it was better that way. The teachers didn't question Hwan, since they didn't notice him move whatsoever.
It took a lot of will power to not cry, being only 4 years old and already experiencing social isolation. Not that he knew what that was, but he knew he was lonely because of everyone else. His small shoulders trembled a bit, eyes welling up in tears before he saw a figure across the table sit down infront of him.
Hwan glanced up, wiping his tears as his eyes met with a pair of bright blue ones. Her dark bangs fell over them lightly, a small smile plastered onto his tanned face. She definitely wasn't fully korean, but she was still cute for a 4 year old.
"Are you lonely too?" She asked, looking down as she drew on a piece of paper. Hwan nodded, unsure what to say but he did feel a lot better being with someone.
"Are you're parents different too?" She asked again.
"Yeah." Hwan said simply, turning over his card and writing his name on the back. "My parents are gay." He said. he looked up, expecting the same disgusted reaction but instead finding a smile. He looked at her dumbfounded, wondering if she was okay.
"You're not leaving me...Are you sick?" he asked.
The girl only laughed, covering her smiled with a hand. "You are funny Hwan." She said "And why would I?"
"I just thought yo-"
"I have 2 dad's too Hwan. On top of that I look like a foreigner and my skin is dark. I'm ugly Hwan." She said, baring her arms to show her completion. Hwan looked at her shocked a bit, reaching over the table and holding her hands.
"You're not ugly, they are."
