Amber woke to Mickey stirring. She had turned over at some point in the night. She seamed to be sweating and moaning in her sleep. She was digging her nails in the floor. Amber didn't know what was happening. She was scared, was she having a nightmare? Amber thought that most be the only logical explanation. She tried to shake her awake but it didn't work. Amber then grabbed Mickey's arms and turned her towards her.
She held on to her arms and looked into her closed eyes. Mickey was crying. What should Amber do? Amber decided to shake Mickey awake again. Finally Mickey's eyes fluttered open. She was still crying. Mickey looked at Amber with wide eyes. She started balling. Amber felt miserable, she didn't want to see her best friend like this! Mickey then sat up and brought her legs to her chest and cried into her knees.
"Aw come her baby." Amber said. She wrapped herself around Mickey and this embrace only made Mickey cry even more. She was sobbing and eventually her jeans were soaked. Amber just held her. Eventually Mickey calmed down enough to be able to talk too.
Amazingly, no one seemed to be woken up by this affair. Amber held out her hand to help Mickey up off the ground. They walked to the porch. There were two lawn chairs out there. It was a cool crisp day in mid November and the girls made there way out to sit on them.
There was a sliding glass door that lead to the little patio. It was drizzling slush outside, not exactly a nice day. The girls put there coats on and sat down. For a while nothing was said. They just sat there watching the rain. After about 5 minutes Amber spoke.
"so do you want to talk about it?" Amber turned to her. Mickey just sat there staring at the rain, avoiding Amber gaze. finally after a few more minutes of silence she spoke up.
"I was in my old house... You know, on east side lane? I was in the l-living room while my mom was d-drunk on the couch, then I called my dad..." Mickey said between sobs.
"He was at work so he couldn't help me... I-I r-ran to find my siblings and bring them into my room. They were in the basement. We stayed there until my dad got home... T-then w-when h-he c-c-came home he was d-d-r-runk to." Mickey said as she chocked back more sobs. She put her head in her hands.
Amber's eyes went wide, she knew Mickey's back story to know that her childhood was wrecked by her parents mistakes. And they just kept coming making Mickey the adult.
"I HAD TO DO IT AGAIN! I-I H-HAD TO BE THE MOM!" Mickey wailed. If the others weren't already awake then, they are now.
"I had to be the h-h-hero all-l-l over ag-gain." Mickey looked over to Amber. She was shocked, Mickey hadn't had an attack like this since 4th grade. Amber rushed out of her seat and over to Mickey. She was a sobbing mess.
"Shh, shh. It's ok, look your safe hun, don't worry. Your parents are better now." Amber was rubbing Mickey's head to calm her down, but it wasn't working. Amber became worried. All the girls were standing by the window. Finally Katie couldn't take it anymore. She knew what was happening, Mickey was having a panic attack from her anxiety levels being too high. Katie opened the sliding door and came over to Amber. She whispered in her ear.
"let me handle this, I know what to do." Amber nodded and stepped a side. Katie laid a hand on Mickey's back. She was hugging her knees and rocking back and forth.
"hey Mickey, hey, hey babe. Can you hear me?" She reached her hand to grab Mickey's chin. She pulled her head up so that Mickey was looking at Katie.
"baby, I need you to start counting up by threes ok? Don't think about anything else except your breathing and the numbers. Can you do that?" Mickey nodded while tears fell down her face.
"I'll start you off and count with you... ready? 3...6...9...12...15..." Mickey stopped rocking "18...21..."Her breathing started to steady "24...27...30...33...36... " Finally she was calm. Mickey stood up and pulled Katie into a big embrace. They stood there for a few minutes, getting away from the world.
Finally they let go. Katie wiped away Mickey's tears. They put there foreheads together.
"See, I knew you could do it." Katie breathed. Mickey laughed. They stood there for a few more seconds. Finally Mickey couldn't take it anymore. She put her hand on the back Katie's head and kissed her. She didn't really care if anyone saw. She just needed the comfort.
All the girls gasped. They stood there mouths open gawking at the two girls. Finally Sophia interrupted.
"wa-what? when? Where?! WHAT?!!!" She walked toward the them. Well so much for secrecy.
"someone tell me whats going on!" She said stomping her foot on the ground. The girls blushed, they weren't expecting this. Mickey turned to the girls holding Katie's hand. The other was on the back of her neck, rubbing it awkwardly.
"Ya um well, Katie's a lesbian and I'm bisexual. I liked her, she liked me. Um, lets see what else... Oh ya! we made out in the bathroom and Georgia walked in. Ummmm, we've been dating ever since? Oh and we also mad eout in your bathroom but then Emily interupted" Mickey said, her face turning red. They all just stared. Eventually amber started laughing.
"Hey! It's not funny!' Katie said crossing her arms.
"actually it is... it's very funny" Amber said buckling over and leaning against the wall. Mickey rolled her eyes and looked at Katie apologetically. Katie waved an arm saying it was fine and walked back inside.
Mickey followed. Before she closed the door she turned to the three confused (and hysterical) girls.
"oh and, don't mention this to anyone please? This is something we want to tell people on our own." Mickey slid the door closed and went over to talk to Katie. She put her arms around her waist and resting her chin on her shoulder. Katie grabbed the back of Mickey's neck with both hands. The stood there in silence. Finally Mickey looked at Katie.
"your hair smells good. Can I just keep it in my pocket forever?" Katie laughed.
"nope. Sorry babe, I like it too much." Katie shook her head. Mickey suddenly had a clever idea, she tickled her sides and Katie buckled over laughing. She giggled and then landed on the couch. Mickey tickling Katie and Katie laughing. Katie arched her back and screamed from laughing so hard tears falling down her face.
"Ok ok I surrender! Uncle! Mercy! stop!" Katie giggled more, finally Mickey stopped and Katie sat up gasping for air. She punched Mickey. Mickey just laughed and hugged her. The other girls walked in and sat down on the couch. All squished together in a group hug.
"we decided that we are very happy for you two" Emily said.
"decided? when was there anything to decide? if any of ya'll are homophobes then we can't hang out sorry" mickey said, full of sarcasm. They all laughed and Amber and Emily moved to sit on the floor.
"So I guess we can't set you up with Ian now?" Sophia huffed in disappointment.
Mickey scoffed. "ya sorry hun, that was never gona happen." she says, rolling her eyes.
Sophia shrugged. "yes, but I can almost guarantee he likes you."
"Ya well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."
They all laughed and Amber turned on the tv. They started watching criminal minds. Mickey snuggled up with Katie. She put her head in the crook of Mickey's neck. For that moment everything was right in the world.
