As of what I could remember, it was the 7th of June in our tropical country. The place wasn’t that well-known but it sure was abundant with resources! People would but lots almost every five months. For the time being, it’s the month for opening ceremonies in schools. And also, a time to bond with my best guys. I mean gals.
“Hey Ali!” they’d yell, charging me with great force. I have six special friends in my life.
•Francisca Marie Fenning – a witty extrovert, A.K.A. Frey
•Victoria Blaise McArthur – a book and fashion pro, A.K.A. Tori
•Elizabeth Crimson Shey – popular singer, A.K.A. Liza/Liz
•Elaina Jane Harolds – shy type singer, A.K.A. Elaina
•Mhia Shayne Towers – hysterically fun, A.K.A. Mhia; and
•Monica Liliana Parker – a beautiful fashion model, A.K.A. Moni
I kept daydreaming about our good times and forgot to look at where I was going. I accidentally bumped into a guy who seems to be in a hurry. Too bad I couldn’t apologize. I continued walking to the assembly area and sat my friends as soon as I saw them. And of course, they saved me a seat.
“Ali!” they squealed. I gave a big grin and a very happy HI-wave.
“Where have you been?” Frey asked.
“Uhh. Dream land?”
“While walking? I couldn’t beat that record.” Mhia beamed.
We all giggled a bit. “Well, good timing. I was just talking about the new mall they’re building in town! So here’s the thing --- …” and the ‘Girl World’ opens where only Tori, Liza and Moni could understand completely. They kept going until the ceremony ended.
All students were then requested to attend to our classrooms for first period immediately. Elaina, Mhia, Monica and Tori got separated from the rest of us. So, we got to be in Ms.Zumman’s Science class, the well-known terror for freshmen like us. Ohhh, did I get goose bumps. She’d gaze at us like we were some kind of prey.
“You three!” Ms.Zumman yelled. “Since you’re new, why don’t you introduce yourselves to your bunkmates. Hm?” Liza quickly pulled my shirt a bit. “Easy, Liza. She could probably smell fear.” I teased.
Frey stepped forward and smartly introduced herself. Clearing her throat, Liza introduced herself as well. Many were dazzled by her. I mean, who wouldn’t?
“And you?” Ms.Zumman raised her brow on me.
“Oh, umm. Good morning everyone, I’m Alison Grey Scarlet but you can call me Ali for short.” I shrugged. We then took our seat.
Ms.Zumman suddenly smites the table to get our attention. “As most of you know, we'll be with each other for one semester. SO, like all responsible teachers, I have rules to be followed. First of all, I hate tardy students.”
Someone suddenly barged open the door. And that ‘someone’ is really kinda familiar to me at some point but I just can’t remember where I saw him.
“Well, well. I wasn’t quite expecting you to show up on the first day, Mr.Fletcher.” Ms.Zumman said sarcastically. “Psh” that was his only reply. He’s quite the rude one. “Sit wherever is vacant.” She seems calmer with him. Is this favoritism? Before I knew it, this guy was sitting right next to me. “Do you mind?” he talked to me. “No.. not at all.” I murmured.
“As I was saying, if you're tardy, better not come to my class at all …” Ms.Zumman continued. Its kinda awkward not talking at all. The silence was really deafening.
“Hi, I’m Lance Fletcher.” He suddenly turned my way. Isn’t he even a bit concerned if he was caught talking? I thought. He tilted his head and asked “You?”
“Umm.” I hesitated to answer him. It isn’t nice to be entertaining someone while someone is talking in front but I guess it won’t hurt, right? “I’m Ali. Alison Grey.” He stifled a laugh.
What was so funny? Is my name funny? He’s really insulting me right now. “You two at the side! Stop chatting and listen if you don’t want get kicked out.” Ms.Zumman exclaimed. “Sorry Ma’am.”
He was really making a fool out of me. First, my name and now, I got scolded by a ‘ter-ro-rific’ professor. What a way to give a first impression. Minutes passed and thankfully, the bell rang. “Ali, we’re going to the girls’ room, you coming?” Liza invited. “I’ll catch up.”
“Ms.Scarlet, may I have a moment?” Ms.Zumman asked. Honestly, my stomach got ol’ twisty and stuff. I took a deep breath and attended to her. “What is it, Ma’am?”
“I can’t help but notice your straight aces in Arts, English and Psychology. If it’s not too much to ask, I want you to tutor Mr.Fletcher in all of them.”
“Me? But Ma’am, isn’t Frey a better choice for this?”
“I already asked her to tutor George. Plus, wouldn’t you want to earn some extra credit? Now, do we have a bargain?”
“Are you kidding me, you old lady?! Stop messing with my life!” Out of nowhere, Lance showed up and startled both of us. “My decision is final. Once you’ve learned your lesson, then we’ll talk. You don’t want your father to know, do you?” she scowled.
I got confused. Anyways, It got pretty intense being in the middle of this so I mushed up all my courage to speak up. “Umm. Excuse me for interrupting but --- “
“Oh, of course. I’m sorry about this. You may go.” Ms.Zumman said. I nodded and slowly backed away but before I could get out…
“Hey.” Lance called, coldly. “5:30 at the bridge, Saturday. Be there.”
I suddenly got goose bumps all over again and got out as fast as I can and ran to the girls’ room and told Liza and the others everything. How I come to know Lance Fletcher as a mysterious, rude backstreet boy.
