I don't know if he's telling the truth. About the girls, I mean. Surely internet sensation, Colby Brock, gets his pick, not just once.
There are blurred lines between a friendship and something more. That's what I learnt last time I felt this way.
Colby's not Connor, I try to tell myself. I hate comparing them but I've been doing it on accident.
"I don't know" I talk quietly but he hears me.
"It's okay, Ella" Colby moves closer, but I respond by inching back.
"I mean, I don't know if... we should..." I point my finger back and forth between us, portraying my point. He seems to get it and nods in understanding. "I'm not sure if I can cope"
I feel awful saying it, but it's true.
I can't love again.
Stop thinking about Connor.
Before I can do anything about it, a tear slips down my cheek. I wipe it away quickly using my hoodie sleeve but Colby already saw it.
"Hey," he speaks to me softly and edges closer again. This time I let him.
Colby wraps his arms around me and holds me in a hug. I'm grateful for this, but it only allows more tears to escape. A few do, but I rid my mind of Connor before I can start weeping.
I let out a silent sigh and Colby pulls back, his eyes locked onto my face.
"How are you so beautiful?" he takes me by surprise with his question. "I just don't get it" Colby grins, making me laugh through my sadness.
"I like you, Colby," I admit fearfully, "there's no point in denying it"
His face lights up at this, not expecting these words from me.
"Cute. You're cute too" he adds playfully. I smile up at him and I feel my stomach go numb.
Stop it.
I rid the smile from my face in desperate attempt to not let whatever is happening to accelerate.
Colby's grin drops as well.
"Something's bugging you" he states. I'm not surprised that has noticed so I reply with a nod.
"It's nothing to worry about. I'm fine" I try to convince him. I don't think he bought my answer but he lets it go, understanding that I probably don't want to think about it. Unluckily for me, I already have. Multiple times.
"So when are you moving?" I needed to change the subject as it was the only way to get my head out of my past.
"In four days" Colby says.
All of a sudden, his computer dings, pulling us from our conversation. Colby sits back down in his desk chair and analyses the screen.
"It's done" he claps his hands together and looks back up at me.
"Awesome" I join his excitement.
