"Let's get out of here," Colby said, sneezing for the sixth time.
If I hadn't seen his squinted eyes and red nose, I would have certainly protested. The barn was incredible. Well, apart from the rats I heard in the back corner.
"Okay," I smiled politely, wrapping my arm around his.
"You're awfully bubbly today," he laughs, looking down at me. "It's a good thing," he adds and I lean into him as we walk.
Once we are seated back in the car, i turn to him. "Thanks for taking my mind off Connor today, it's been really fun."
"Of course," Colby looks genuinely grateful that today's plans positively occupied my mind.
He starts the car and turns back towards the driveway over the bumpy uneven grass.
"We should come back here" I suggest, looking at the old farmhouse in the side mirror.
"Definitely. I was thinking the same thing," Colby agrees.
The drive home is relatively uneventful - quite silent, but comfortable. I recognise Colby's neighbourhood before we reach the house.
I wonder how Jas is doing with Aaron babysitting her. Pulling out my phone, I flick her a message.
Ella: Having fun? :)
She responds a couple of seconds later.
Jas: Yup! I'm at the mansion now.
I didn't bother replying to that because we were moments away from being inside.
Colby turns into his street.
Oh no.
I see none other than Connor's car parked outside the front gate.
I turn to Colby, who's noticed the dreaded maroon car too.
None of us speak. I don't really know what to say other than 'please remove me from this situation', which I know Colby already understands. He doesn't stop the car though, but before Connor can notice us, Colby takes a left turn into a side street.
"Let's get something to eat. I'll pay," he offers after glancing in the rear view mirror.
"I'm not hungry," my voice is blank but I didn't intend to come across as rude.
"It'll be okay, Ella. Just forget about him for now," Colby says softly, reaching for my hand and intertwining our fingers. I blush slightly, looking down.
"Okay," I smile. It'll be hard to not think about Connor waiting there for me to return home but I'll try for Colby.
"Sushi?" He asks.
I nod eagerly. We hadn't had anything to eat all day.
"Sushi it is." Colby chuckles, squeezing my hand in his.
