I wake up groggy with sleep. The feeling of a different bed underneath me makes me sit up and examine my surroundings. Colby's room is dark, only a rather translucent layer of moonlight coming through the gaps on each side of the blinds. I can't see too much but I realise I'm underneath Colby's duvet. He must've pulled it over me when I fell asleep. Where was he?
What time is it?
My hands scurry over the surrounding beading, trying to find my phone. When I reach out to my left, my hand comes into contact with warm skin. I nearly squeal.
Colby?
I peer closer and he's sound asleep next to me. Luckily he doesn't stir from my actions, even when I climb cautiously over his inanimate body to get to the floor. He must be a deep sleeper. It's unfortunate that I almost loss my balance, my second foot slamming down hard on the floor.
"Ella?"
His sleepy voice causes me to freeze.
Damnit.
I pivot, facing him. I'm so glad that the darkness hides my messy bed hair and half-closed eyes.
Colby smiles questioningly when our eyes connect.
"I just want to know the time. Sorry for accidentally waking you," I mutter the last sentence, realising just how many times I'd apologised for the same before.
Expecting him to be mad, I backed away a couple of feet.
"Come, get back into bed," he pats the spot next to him. I oblige hesitantly.
How is he not angry?
I slip back under the cosy black duvet, leaving distance between us just incase. Colby then sits up, the duvet slipping from his chest. He's shirtless but I stop my lingering eyes when I realise he's checking his phone on the nightstand.
"It's nearly 2am," he informs me, yawning inaudibly.
"Thanks," I say before turning over and closing my eyes.
I've spent the whole day catching up on sleep in Colby's bed. The thought causes me to sit up again.
He's still on his phone, scrolling through what looks to be Instagram.
"Um.. I can leave if- I can get an uber," I stutter.
"I want you to stay," Colby says softly, his eyes leaving his phone to look at me.
"Are you sure?" I ask, not even sure I heard him correctly.
"Ella, what do I have to do to persuade you that I like having you around?" Now he looks amused, leaving me confused.
"I've been such a terrible burden to you, Colby," I look down at my hands.
"You could never be a burden to me."
