It's the day before my birthday. I'm turning 18 and half the team isn't even here. I stand in the kitchen, making myself a coffee from the machine. I ache more than ever today, the rest have given me the day off to recover for my birthday. I'm bruised all over and have a few cuts here and there but nothing too serious.
"Can I have one?" I turn to see Matt and I smile. "Of course, sugar?" He nods as I make him his coffee and hand it to him. "Thanks, how's training going?" He takes a seat, setting his stick down beside him. I let out a sigh, "alright.." I reply with uncertainty. "Little bruised in places but that was expected." He lets out a small chuckle before taking a sip. "Think you're ready?" I shrug, "I've been ready for weeks. Though my Father won't ever let me go on the field." I take the seat facing him and sip at my coffee. "You're 18 tomorrow, Callie. Fury will want you on the team. Just like he did Jess and Elijah." I scoff, right now I couldn't care less about them. I know they're on a mission but that's what annoys me. "Something wrong?" He asks. I look down at my coffee and frown. "I may be blind but I'm not stupid, Callie. I know the relationship between Jess and Elijah bugs you. You don't want to share either of them. Especially Elijah. But you have no choice, it's their decision at the end of the day." I stand up and sigh "I know that I just want Elijah back for my birthday.." Matt smiles softly "Doing anything nice? For your birthday I mean." I shrug once again "Nothing that I've planned. Dad said he's gonna take me out. Like every year I guess.." Matt stands and takes both his stick and the coffee. He walks over and gently strokes my cheek. I smile softly as he taps my nose "you've always been my favourite child out of them all. Remember that." Matt gives me a grin before walking out, I laugh softly and head to the communal lounging area where a few others are talking, though they stop when I walk in. That was strange, have I done something? I shake off the feeling and take a seat at one of the smaller tables where there's a spare laptop. I can feel everyone's eyes on me. "What?!" I shout, looking around the room. They turn away and start muttering to themselves. "Don't worry about them." I hear my Mom as she walks over and sits beside me. "How are you?" She asks, looking at my bruises and sighing. "I'm fine, I promise," I assure her, continuing my search. She closes the laptop and takes my hands, pulling me up from the seat. "Come.." is all she says, taking me from the room. "Where are we going?" I ask, why is everyone acting so strange around me. Pepper ignores my question and takes me into their room. I look round in hopes to see my dad and sigh when he's not around. Taking a seat on the bed I watch her dig out a box from the cupboard. "I know it's your birthday tomorrow but I want to give you this today." She takes out a small box and walks over, sitting beside me and handing me the box. The box was small but long, gently I take off the top and look at the small locket. Smiling softly I gently take it out and hold it up. "It was mine, and your grandmother's, and your great grandmothers..and now it's yours. To give to your daughter and so on.." running my thumb over the small locket I mean against her. "It's beautiful... thank you.." I whisper, passing it over as she puts it on for me. "Open it up," she says, I take the locket and gently open it. It's in three, on either side is a picture of my parents and in the middle is me. "Think of it as we're always with you. Protecting you." I close the locket and wrap my arms around her. Her head rests on mine as she gently strokes my hair. "You'll always be my little girl Callie.. always." I laugh softly and look at her. "Can I tell you something..?" I ask, she nods as my cheeks flush. "I.. I erm.." I stop as she continues for me, "like Bucky? I know. Everyone knows. Even your father, we watch security tapes of your training. We saw that almost kiss." She says with a grin, I groan and look away. "Just be careful with him Callie, he's dangerous.." I frown and look at her. "Promise me you'll be careful." I nod and force a smile "I Promise, Mom" she kisses my forehead and stands up, "you should get some rest. There's no doubt that you're going to be woken up early tomorrow by someone. Usually Steve but who knows." I laugh and nod "you're right. I'm never usually a nice person when I don't get my sleep." She nods in agreement and laughs with me before ushering me out. "Goodnight Cal." She says before closing the door, I smile and head to my room. Come to think of it, I'm exhausted even after the coffee and it's pretty late.
Heading to my room, I pass Buckys. I stop and think, maybe I should say good night. His door is slightly ajar. As I go to knock I hear him talking on the phone. "Yeah? Great I'll come pick you up and we can go from there. Be good to see you again.. alright Love you too." He hangs up the phone and looks towards the door, but I'm already halfway down the hall, tears streaming down my face. My hearts broken, how stupid could I be for thinking he would ever love me. I'm not good enough for him. Storming into my room I slam the door, sliding down against it and resting my head in my hands. I cry. For what feels like a lifetime but at some point, I fall asleep.
