Darcy's POV
Never before had the urge to throw myself from a moving car been so strong. I'd have even pushed Sherlock or John out of the way to get to the door handle if I had to.
Unfortunately for me I couldn't throw myself from the car for two reasons. One being that Sherlock or John would have actually prevented me from doing so and the second being that at the end of this car journey was a possibly very interesting case.
So I just sat between them- sulking- as Sergeant Donovan purposefully moved slightly to glare at me through the rear view mirror. To avoid her gaze I turned my attention to the passing scenery out the window.
Soon enough we were driving into the grounds of the school and I was thankful that after what felt like hours I wasn't forced to look at Donovan's face anymore. Once Lestrade stopped outside St Aldate's school we all clambered out the car and I straightened my blouse while I waited for John to walk around to our side.
We approached a police car where a woman was wrapped in a shock blanket and blowing her nose. The officer in casual wear walked off as we walked closer as did the uniformed officer. "Miss Mackenzie, House Mistress. Go easy." Lestrade muttered to both myself and Sherlock.
I nodded and raised my eyebrows at Sherlock who remained expressionless as we walked up to Miss Mackenzie. John and Lestrade stayed back a little, probably to separate themselves from however Sherlock was going to handle this interview.
"Miss Mackenzie, you're in charge of pupil welfare..." Sherlock started and I looked at warily as I didn't like his monotone voice, "...yet you left this place wide open last night." I flinched as his voice rose angrily, "What are you: an idiot, a drunk or a criminal?"
My eyes widened as he grabbed the shock blanket and pulled it sharply from her shoulders. I stepped back and sighed at his behaviour, trying like John and Lestrade to disassociate myself from Sherlock. Miss Mackenzie gasped in terror and Sherlock glared at her furiously as he added loudly, "Now quickly, tell me!"
"All the doors and windows were properly bolted. No-one- not even me- went into their room last night. You have to believe me!" Miss Mackenzie answered tearfully and brought her napkin up to her eyes to wipe away her tears.
I turned my head to share a look with John, a look we shared almost all too often when Sherlock acted in his usual anti-social manner. When I looked back, however, Sherlock's body language had changed and he had gently taken hold of Miss Mackenzie's shoulders. "I do. I just wanted you to speak quickly." He spoke softly and looked up at a nearby police officer as he turned to walk away. "Miss Mackenzie will need to breathe into a bag now."
The woman sobbed audibly and the officer rushed over to comfort her. I huffed and hurried after Sherlock. "I admire the method but was it really necessary?" I commented and put my hands in the pockets of my jeans.
"Quickest way to get information out of people is through emotional distress." He replied and trotted up the stairs to enter the school.
I glanced over my shoulder to see John, Lestrade and Donovan following us both. The walk up to the children's dormitories was silent as none of us wanted to discuss Sherlock's behaviour any further. We passed by several police officers and a couple of forensics people in white disposable boiler suits.
