A.N. That was a boring prologue. Oh well, I’m still learning how to write again. It’s just like riding a bicycle after stopping for a long time. You get used to your butt feeling numb.

Chapter 1

“Damien, take table number seven. Dana is having a hard time with table three.”

I sighed as my boss gave me another table. I was already handling five tables out of the dozen tables in the diner. Dana was handling only two tables. Guess it helps if you’re the daughter of the owner. I muttered as I grabbed my pen and pad of paper.

“Welcome to Rio’s Grill, may I take your order?” I droned the usual greeting as I stared at my pad with a bored expression.

“I’ll take balls but oh wait, you don’t have any.” Marco snickered as I lowered my pad to look at the customers on table seven. Marco and Adrian were on the left side of the table trading backslaps. Witty… not.

“Well sir, we certainly do not serve balls, but I’m surprised. I didn’t think you swung that way.” I deadpanned, adding only a small smirk at the end of my sentence.

Marco stopped laughing, a dull red blush creeping up his face as he slowly realized what I said. Slow, really I was done counting to ten by the time his eyes flashed yellow. I was more than prepared to dodge when he started to pounce. I don’t even need to dip into my wolf strength, I mused as I balanced myself on the balls of my feet.

“Don’t even think about it.”

My back shivered as I felt someone behind me. I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. The voice was enough. It was velvet, fire and ice and it cut through me as my body locked in place. Only werewolves of Alpha bloodline have such command. Kirk!

Kirk glared at Marco and Adrian who stiffened in fear. Usually the command of an Alpha would last more than a minute but I shook myself free of it and glared at Kirk. I do not like being ordered around! This earned me only an amused smile from Kirk.

Finally Marco worked his mouth free. “Alpha, we’re just reminding the outcast of his promises not to break the rules.” He alternated gazes of hatred at me and frantic eyes at Kirk. The big lug must be remembering by now that Kirk and I used to be bestfriends.

Kirk’s face was grim as he sat down opposite Marco and Adrian. “Keep shouting alpha and you will be breaking the rules.”

Marco gulped and Adrian nodded quickly and gave Marco a jab on the side.

“Furthermore, I’m not alpha yet.” Kirk said nonchalantly.

Please, his dad was like almost eighty years old, longest ever reigning Alpha even among ancient packs. He’s due to pass the mantle to Kirk soon.

“And you.”

I glared back.

“Disobeying my orders as always.” He said bemusedly.

Gritting and baring my teeth I answered with syrupy tones. “Well sir,” Still in waiter mode. “You said so yourself, you’re not yet the alpha.” I continued. “And if you were to order me to jump over a cliff, I’d push you over first.”

Marco and Adrian gave me scandalized looks. Kirk only intensified his gaze. A thoughtful crease marred his handsome face and a low growl made my hairs stand up. I’ve gotten stronger over the years after I was cast out of the pack but I wasn’t relishing the thought of standing against an alpha, even if he was Kirk. He had gotten huge in just four years and still growing! Alpha genes, I muttered darkly.

Ice blue eyes suddenly danced in amusement as if he knew what I was thinking. “Ha, you’re still the same Dy.” That was Kirk’s nickname for me. I don’t know why but it still hurts when he calls me that.

“So, to what pleasure do I owe the future Alpha, for gracing me with his lovely presence?”

Marco looked at me smugly. His arrogance was back. Seriously for a blockhead, he keeps forgetting he’s just a body guard. Adrian couldn’t even look at me in the eyes. He knew who I was.

“You were supposed to be my beta…” Kirk whispered sadly.

I stepped back as his words struck me deeply. Four years of pain came rushing back.
