AN – My first unknown POV. Yay! This time I’m writing with a serious mindset of someone very old. Hope I get it right.

 Chapter 10

Unknown POV

I’m getting old but in no way have I weakened.

The papers in front of me held no interest. I’ve already entrusted others to see to them.

Thumbing my chin thoughtfully, I decided to follow up one report given to me a day ago. I grabbed my burner phone from a hidden compartment in my desk and dialed a number that I’ve memorized. No use having a scrap of paper for this phone number, too many spies.

The phone rang twice to be picked up by someone with a melodious voice. I didn’t wait for any greeting as I gruffly issued a command. “It’s me.”

“Hey!” She drawled out that one syllable word with a singsong voice.

“Are you alone?”

“Oh don’t bother, the rascal just stepped out of the house.” She continued without hesitation.

I waited for a few minutes as she pretended to ramble about gossip until I was sure the rascal was out of hearing range. His hearing range meaning some forty to fifty meters away. I know about him a lot.

“That’s enough.” I cut her off curtly.

She giggled. “What? You don’t want to hear how Mia got a bad case of pubic fleas and probably infected mo-“

“A report came in yesterday.” Silence greeted me on the other line. “I’m pretty sure you know what this report contains.”

She mumbled something in her breath too low for me to understand. “Now Peter, he only skipped during lunch. It wasn’t enough to throw our plans into-“

“Dammit Liza!” I roared at her. Good thing my office was soundproof against snooping werewolves. “I’m this close to finding a suitable mate with Alpha blood and you’re screwing it up!” My head started pounding. “I trusted you with this simple job!”

Silence.

“Is it?” Liza’s voice said quietly. “Is it a simple job? Is it the right thing to do? Is it worth it in the end?”

I was now shaking in anger and regret. I didn’t want any of this to happen but I had to.

“Liza! Would you seriously put in danger five hundred lives just for two pups to fuck?!”

Liza huffed into the phone in anger. “It’s not fucking Marcus! We’re meddling with their lives just like how we ruined ours.” I could hear her sobbing quietly as she continued her tirade. “My mate, your mate, me, you… us. The hell we’ve been through!”

Suddenly I felt tired, my back sagging on my swivel chair. “What do you want me to do?” I told her softly.

“I don’t know Peter. I don’t know… but it’s not right. We’re messing with the bonds set by the Moon Goddess and wolf gods.”

“Liza, I’ll gladly take in the consequences.” I told her sadly. “Right now, I’ve got several packs sniffing at my heels because I’m getting old. That’s not to mention the status of the pack in the Grand Circle. With very few Elders, we can’t exactly tip votes into our favor. My allies, Liza, they’re starting to lose confidence.”

“I know… Forgive me Peter, I… I was just rambling. I needed to get those off my chest. Yes I’ll still help you. For Clare, for Rocko.”

A small pang started to build in my chest after hearing my mate’s name. Rocko. I refused to remember him but one memory slipped through, his beautiful smile. That smile was the same smile on the outcast that I banished. It hurt every time I saw that smile.

The pain became blinding and I almost dropped my phone in search for a metal flask that held a potion brewed by Liza.

“Peter! Are you okay!?”

I swallowed a large amount and the pain dulled to a small ember. “I’m fine now. You?”

“I’m okay, I drank mine a while ago.”

Clare was… Liza’s mate. An Alpha female from a distant pack. They were escaping together after several attempts of rogue packs to kidnap Clare. They stumbled into my territory for help. They trusted me for a few years until… I did the same thing what the rogues wanted.

And my mate Rocko. Oh god Rocko I’m so sorry! I took another large gulp from the flask.

“Peter… I forgive you.”

“I know Liza, but I don’t deserve it.” I growled at her. “Just- just make sure to keep him away until I find a suitable mate.”

Liza sighed. “What happened to us is happening again.”

I kept my wits as guilty silence stretched between us.

“I promise,” She finally broke the silence. “Bye Peter.” The phone line ended with a soft click.

It took several minutes for me to calm down.

Wiping my face with my hand, I arranged my desk and hid my burner phone and flask. I needed to talk to the person who gave me the report. I pressed a button on my desk to talk to my secretary. “Send him in.”

My office doors opened and in strode a young man.

“Have a seat,” I gestured to an empty chair in front of my desk. “We’re you waiting that long? I had some things to attend to.”

“No Alpha sir,” The man blushed. “It wasn’t that long.”

“Well,” I continued in a jolly tone. "I just want to congratulate you. That position is not a joke and I know you deserve it.”

The man blushed again. “Thank you very much Alpha sir.”

I smiled at him. “I also want to thank you for your reports especially the one yesterday. They’ve been very vital to the safety of the pack.”

“You’re welcome Alpha, the safety of the pack is my priority.”

“That’s all I wanted to hear. Just keep on doing what you’ve been doing. You’re dismissed.”

I barely heard the respectful withdrawal from the man. Yes, I’ll do anything just to keep my pack safe.
