The Weaning is an important milestone in the lives of werewolves. Its main purposes include protection, education and acceptance.

Pups are protected by their parents by keeping their identities a secret. Parents go to great lengths to avoid transformations in the presence of pups. Usually, a family will live out of the wolf den until the pup comes of age. Living out in the open also throws off potential hunters and rogue wolves.

Education is the second step of weaning. Wolf traits start to show several days before a pup’s thirteenth birthday. The parents of the pup start the orientation process to explain the various changes a pup will undergo after weaning. This also includes the organizational structure and responsibilities of werewolves in the pack.

Acceptance is the last process of weaning. This is usually skipped as most pups are eager to become werewolves. In very rare cases when one pup isn’t able to accept who he or she is, the inner pack intervenes. No one really knows what happens to pups that don’t accept their fate.

As the weaning draws near, the pup begins transformation on his or her thirteenth birthday in the middle of the night. The moon only hastens transformation however most families go to great lengths to make sure the birthday of their pups fall on a full moon during weaning. They believe that a weaning under the fullmoon brings good luck, strength and intelligence and a chance of getting better abilities for their pups.
