"Would anybody like to share what they did over the labor day weekend?" Mrs. Marsh questioned her classroom. The little ones all looked tired and uninterested, a three day weekend can do that to you.
"Anybody?"No one answered her question so she decided to take measures in her own hands. "I guess all have to pull sticks to see who's going to share." She picked up the blue water cup of popsicle sticks, that had each of her student name on one of them, from her desk.
All of her students sucked their little teeth. They hated when she used the popsicle sticks because they felt that if they didn't want to share they shouldn't have to.
Mrs. Marshal eagerly smiled shaking the cup, not aware of how much she was annoying her students today. The little ones just weren't in the mood. "Timothy your up first buddy, how was your extended weekend?" She removed his popsicle stick then sat it on her desk to prevent from drawing his name again.
"My weekend—" Timothy started.
"Stand up please so the class could hear you loud and clear. " Mrs. Marshall interrupted. She wanted her little ones to learn to speak strong and comfortably. "Everyone give your attention to Timothy. " She instructed since the class had went into discussions about Mrs. Marshal's persistence.
Timothy rose from the small chair. "My weekend was bery' good I stay' home and' mommy let me wadch' tv' all day and eat lot of snacks and she det' me sleep in and—."
"Sounds fun Timothy, did you read or practice your writing?" She questioned knowing that he would go on all day if she didn't stop him.
"Naaa'." He sat back down and the class irrupted in giggles. "I dust' wead' and wite' at school only. "
"Alrighty than." She decided she would address those comments late. "Let's see who's up next." The giggling seized. She shook up the up and drew another popsicle stick. "Addie you're up." She smiled.
Addie hesitantly stood up in her chair. She wasn't afraid to share out loud because she was friends with almost everyone in the class, she didn't want to share because she wanted no reminder of the state that she witnessed her mother in Sunday evening.
The class fell silent and everyone started at Addie waiting for her to speak but she didn't, this was unlike her Addie loved to talk.
"When you're ready dear." Mrs. Marshal said.
"Weld' dis' weekend I—I sawd' my mommy in d' doctors place." Addie chocked on her words before releasing a river of tears. "An— and she was hurt wealy' wealy' baddd." She slumped back into her seat.
"I want mommy to be otay." She continued to sob. Her classmates looked on in sorrow they didn't know how to respond.
"Oh no, I'm so sorry Addie." Mrs.Marshal felt extremely bad for causing her student to cry. "I'm so sorry. "
"It's Otay Addie God will make your mommy feel better." Elizabeth comforted her, they had gradually became best friends and we're who all the other kids wanted to be around.
