"Hey momma." Lauren tightly hugged momma Nae. Lauren had decided to stop bye her place after finishing her classes for the day. Momma Nae had been begging her to come over since before she had even been discharged anyway.
"Hey baby." Momma Nae squeezed her. "I'm so happy to see you well." She exhaled deeply before letting Lauren go and examining her small frame.
"Thank you, I know you were praying hard for me." Lauren smiled.
Lauren had lost a ton of weight since the accident. She had a miscarriage at thirteen weeks while she was in a coma due to to the trauma that she had experienced. The doctors had only disclosed this with her her and she wasn't yet ready to tell her loved ones.
"Yes I was." They made their way to the kitchen. "Are you hungry?" Momma Nae rhetorically asked because whether you were hungry or not she was going to feed you.
"I'm fine." Lauren rubbed small circles into her flat abdomen. "I had some American Deli earlier. " Lauren had ordered a 5 piece honey hot wing with a philly with everything on it and a side of crinkle fries with extra ranch, her favorite meal. But she couldn't even finish two wings, her appetite had abandoned her a long time ago.
"You're losing too much weight baby, just eat a little." Momma Nae removed a burgundy colored glass plate from the cabinet.
Lauren examined her as she piled cabbage baked chicken and baked macaroni onto the plate. "This should do you some good." Momma Nae turned around dressing the plate with a silver spoon before handing it to Lauren.
"Thank you." Lauren rested the steaming hot plate on the dinning room table before pulling out her seat.
"You're welcome." Momma Nae smiled bringing her white tea cup to her lips. "How has school been going?"
"Its been going well, I'm almost all the way caught up." The four weeks Lauren missed sat her so far back that if she didn't beg for her professors to give her a second chance she would've flunked out this semester, her last semester. Taking into consideration that she only had four more months to graduate and her great work ethic, they sided with her and allowed her to catch up.
"That's good baby." I'm ready for your graduation." Momma Nae smiled sitting her lipstick stained mug onto the table. She knew how hard Lauren had been working on her degree and was proud that it was finally paying off.
"Me too." Lauren groaned before spooning cabbage, her favorite vegetable, into her mouth. " I'm tired of writing papers, I want to get to real work." She chewed while speaking.
"I know you are."
"Mmmmhmm, Momma this is real good." Lauren continued to scarf down the soul food, Momma Nae was able to retrieve Lauren's appetite.
"I'm surprised I have any left Cordell had came over earlier and nearly cleared me out." She shook her head. "That boy knows he can eat."
"Right, Ion know how he's soo skinny, He eats enough for you and me and that tapeworm in his stomach." She joked.
Even though Lauren had stopped speaking to Ajayy for all those years she had never lost contact with Cordell because he would be at Momma Nae's every weekend for Sunday dinner. His funny antics always helped brighten her mood and he wasn't concerned with running back and telling Ajayy her business.
