"You alright there?"

Lucifer looked up. He'd been half asleep, only just managing not to slide off the uncomfortable metal chairs provided by the hospital in just about every corridor. Michael was still in his mother's room with his dad, Lucifer having decided to give them some time alone.

"Yeah, I'm good." He forced a smile as he tried to clean away the sleep from his eyes.

"You sure? You look exhausted."

"I am. What time is it?"

The woman smiled and checked her watch. "It's five o'clock in the morning."

"Oh, sh—" He caught himself. "Oh, right, thanks."

"No problem." The woman stayed where she was for a moment, before taking an empty chair beside him. "I'm Jody, Jody Mills." She held out her hand.

"Lucifer," he replied, taking her hand and shaking it.

The woman raised her eyebrows, but chose to comment on something else instead. "You been in here all night?"

"Yeah." Lucifer blinked rapidly and sat up, stretching. "I've got to go get Michael," he motioned to the room near the end of the corridor, "We've got school."

Jody smiled and nodded. "I'd check your phone first. It's gone off twice in the last ten minutes."

"Right, thanks."

Lucifer pulled his phone out as he got up and, sure enough, the screen lit up displaying a stream of successive notifications. Four missed calls from Cas, several messages from Gabriel and Balthazar, and a further five missed calls from his parents. He mentally slapped himself for falling asleep.

He made a quick call at the end of the corridor, phoning his father to explain the situation.

Chuck was rather annoyed at first, his voice raised as he demanded to know where Lucifer was, why he'd bunked school (because yes, the office had called him), and why he hadn't answered any of his messages. He had also wanted to know why Lucifer had borrowed Anna's car and had then proceeded to ask where he was for the second time.

It took a couple of minutes for Lucifer to calm his father down and assure him that he was safe, before he could start explaining what had happened. Chuck had settled down after that, but then Lucifer had had to deal with his mother taking the phone, who sounded as though she'd been recently crying and kept saying how much she'd been worried.

The call ended some minutes later, when Chuck had promised to come and pick them up from the hospital and get them some decent breakfast: hospital food was infamous.

Lucifer knocked before entering Michael's mother's room.

Sarah was still unconscious and looked even paler than before, if that was even possible, but the beeping of the various machines surrounding her at least reassured that she was still alive.

Michael was sleeping in the chair next to his mother's bed, still reaching out to hold her hand.  His father was sat at the other end of the room, head in his hands, quietly whispering away.

Lucifer suspected that he was praying.

Quietly, the Novak tapped his boyfriend on the shoulder, gently shaking him awake.  "Micha? It's morning. My dad's coming to pick me up and he's bringing food. You can come with us if you'd like."

It took a moment for Michael's half-asleep brain to process the information it was being given. When he understood, he rose to follow Lucifer, but stopped before he'd gone more than two steps. "What about mum?"
