"Are you sure this is what you want to do?" She asks again as I put all of my things in the trunk.
"Yes, Mama. I have to. I need to go out in the world and make something of myself." She sighs and caresses my face. I give her one last hug closing my eyes, savoring this moment. My dad walks out with my siblings smiling.
"Oh Ellie you've grown up so fast."
"Genevieve, where are you moving again?" Jacob and Tyler ask in sync.
"Minneapolis, Minnesota."
"Why are you moving to... Mini soda?" Jacob asks. I chuckle and squat so I'm at eye level.
"Because I got job there and this is my chance to be independent."
"You'll be back right?"
"Absolutely. I'll come back every year when it's time to go sailing okay?"
"Shake on it." We do our super special secret handshake and I stand up.
"What about me?!" I look over and see my baby sister waddling over to me. Jacklynn is only five but sometimes she thinks she's grown. I pick her up and swing her around in the air.
"You gonna be good while I'm gone?" She nods. "Gonna send me pictures?" Nods again. "Good." I kiss her forehead and jostle her dreads as I put her down.
"We love you, Genevieve."
"I love you too." With that I hop in a cab and head to the airport.
Some odd hours later...
I've finally arrived and take another cab to my new home. My roommate and best friend, Juliet appears in front of me as I open the door.
"Hey, Gen. Finally made it in?"
"Yup and I'm ready to go to bed. "
"Then let me show you where your room is." She grabs one of my suitcases and brings it inside. "Good thing I set it up for you already." We walk through the living room and down a tiny hallway. A big teal G is on the door to my left. She opens it and inside is a bedroom designed just for me. The walls are covered in the posters I sent ahead of time. My dressers are solid black with gold fixtures and my bed is draped with a teal and purple comforter.
Dropping my suitcase, I jump onto my bed and let out a dramatic groan.
Juliet chuckles, "I'll let you two get acquainted. I'm across the hall if you need me." I quickly shower and change into pjs before curling up in my bed. Enveloped in black sheets, I think of all the things I left behind. My family, the restaurant, my other friends etc. I just hope I made the right choice.
I have an amazing job starting on Monday. I'm living with my best friend. I'm following my dreams. Goodbye New York City. Hello Minneapolis.
