Day 1

_____________________

"Allie, I'm running away." These words, spoken by my best friend, affected me little at first but the reality then hit me like a train. I laughed at the thought.

"Where are you going to go eh? Hide in a forest?." Mark smirked but I could tell it was forced because it was followed by a wince of pain.

"Uh no. That's where the favour comes in." I gasped in realisation and people turned to look at me strangely. After they turned away, I relaxed my shoulders and turned back to him.

"Of course you can stay. You are my best friend and I'd do anything for you."

"I'm coming on Monday night. Listen outside, I'll be there around midnight." My best friend's smile was what I lived for. It glowed as the owner glanced down at me. Although I didn't realise it then, this conversation would change my life.

I walked away from Mark, face slanted, a sign he was in deep thought. The direction I was headed into was towards the kindergarten room. My other best friend, my sister and I monitored there for extra credit, and to give back to the school. My sister had gone to Poland and wouldn't be back for about two weeks so it was just me and May-belle until then. Her face curled in amusement when I skipped in.

"Nice hair." She smiled. The evening before, my neighbours Bo and Lenka had straightened my hair. I had been getting compliments all day, from my friends, my acquaintances (classmates), and even one from my arch enemy, also known as my ex crush... Earlier that morning:

"Who are you?" Tyler asked smirking at me. "You remind me of someone but you're prettier. What was her name? Oh yeah it was Allie." As I hung my backpack on my hook he smirked. "That was a compliment." I dropped my plaid bag and turned to look him in the eye.

"I know it was because Allie is ugly, fat, and she has no friends." Tyler laughed deeply and flashed a genuine smile towards me.

"You're welcome."

(End of Flashback)...

"Thanks May." She sensed my worry.

"Alls, what's wrong?"

"It's Mark. He needs to run away and wants to stay with me." Her mouth formed a mocking 'O'.

"Don't do it Al, don't. You could get arrested. Think of what you're risking- everything, you're risking everything."

"I need to. Really. I love him, he's my best friend. He needs me right now, if I don't support him, I don't deserve for him to support me." May-belle sighed, she had given up.

"K hun. You'll do great... bla bla bla. Really, he'll give up after a couple days, he'll be homesick, and he'll be bored of you." I slapped her arm playfully and gave her a tiny smile. "I trust you to not do anything wrong" May winked at me. "and to not "take advantage of the situation." I scoffed at her.

"You know I don't like him."

"Alls hun, I can never be too sure with you."

"Touché." I threw her an evil and walked back out into the hallway. With all this weighing on my mind, I was going to have a very long day.

Later on, after lunch, I was outside with one of my older friends. Laura and I were rating the boys at our school, sitting on a bench, when Mark ran up to me, followed by a trio of angry girls from our class. "Rape, rape." He shouted, the girls giggling.

"Give us the hat!" Mary screeched in my ear as Mark pried me and Laura apart and slithered in between us, nearly sitting on me. Their argument went on for a few minutes, but I ignored what it was about because Laura and I were having a gesture conversation. She was telling me to get up so we could get away from the yelling and talk about hot boys somewhere else. Truthfully I couldn't get up with Mark almost sitting on me and was even feeling claustrophobic. I got over it and poked him away, after jumping up and walking quickly towards Laura. Mark followed me.

"Thank you." I felt his hot breath on my ear. I looked up to see his smile and simply returned it.

After school, I walked into my apartment and greeted my scruffy mom. I debated whether to tell her about Mark or not. My decision process was cut short when my conscious decided to come out with it. Or at least kind of. "Mom I have to tell you this but you cannot tell anyone." She nodded, promising. "Mark has been having some trouble at home and needs somewhere to cool off. Would he be able to stay here?" She gave an unenthusiastic half smile.

"Well he could come over tonight." I frowned.

"For a few days?" My mom stood for a moment, deep in thought, then said nothing. From her, silence is almost always a yes. I threw my arm around her neck for a quick hug and pecked her on the cheek.

"Thank you so much mom!" I ran to my room, flung myself on the bed, and eventually got up and stood in front of the mirror on my dresser. Was this even going to work? I knew something bad was going to happen.
