The party is loud. Like really loud. Or maybe I'm just getting old man syndrome.
"NORA!" A tall girl with short red hair and legs that go on for miles comes into view waving madly at Nora.
We've entered the house and it's bustling and hot. Not exactly the kind of setting I want for my first kiss with Nora. Maybe I should rethink this?
No Riley do not talk yourself out of this. Do not be a coward.
The place is filled with people aged in their early twenties to ealry fifties. Nora and I are probably the youngest people here.
"Gina!" Nora squeals going over to the long legged red head. They embrace and the girl (who we can now assume is Gina one of the children of the rich family that owns this million dollar house) sloshes some of her drink down Nora's leather jacket.
"Oh shoot." Gina says letting go and trying to examine the jacket.
"It's alright. It's too hot for it anyway." Nora takes off the jacket to reveal the tight white t-shirt she wears underneath it. I have to remind myself not to stare.
Hey give me a break. I may be a nice guy but I'm no saint.
"Who's this?" Gina asks looking at me with a sparkle in her eyes.
Nora puts an arm around me. "This is Riley."
"Are you two dating?" She asks curiously.
"No, we're just friends." I say.
"That's good to know. You two have fun, I have to greet more people but be sure to catch up with me later." She grins flirtatiously at me and then winks. Nora still has her arm around me and I feel her hand twitch slightly.
"Don't pay any attention to her. She's just a big flirt." Nora says letting her hand slip and put her jacket over her arm. I can hear something in her voice that sounds like jealousy but that can't be right.
"I'm more into bruenettes than red heads anyway." I say.
Nora blushes slightly or maybe it's just the lighting. "So do you want something to drink or are there people you want to catch up with?"
She shakes her head. "No, Gina's really the only person I'm friendly with here. I do want to find somewhere to put this though." She nods to her jacket.
"I spotted a closet on the way in so I guess we could look there?" I suggest.
"Yeah that's a good idea." She says.
We go off in search of the closet eventually finding it. It doesn't look like a place to store jackets. More of a broom closet.
"I guess we could find Gina or her parents and ask?" I say.
"Nah. I'll just chuck it in here. It's probaby safer in there. The only people going in there will be drunk losers hooking up. They'll be too focused on getting it on so they won't try and steal it." She says.
A woman of about forty who's just come in through the door hears what Nora's said and gives her a look of disgust.
"Nora." I mumble embarrassed.
"Nora Reynolds. Can you not keep your vulgar mouth shut for one moment?" The woman says casting her eyes over Nora as if she were a flee infested feral cat rather than a person.
"Hello Mrs Yarrow." Nora says politely to the woman. "How is Lola these days? I haven't seen her in so long. Is she still pretending that Tanya is just a friend? I mean not that there's anything wrong with it but I know how the ladies at your Church would react."
