Justin

I have my outfit ready, and I'm standing in the mirror, breathing heavily.

It's three minutes into the dance, and Chaz texted me, telling me it's already packed. I put my cheetah shoes on, and then put my glasses on that are practically glass.

They're for show, and I think it makes me look smarter.

I pace around my room, it's like my posters, are scolding me. Do I look alright?

It doesn't match much, but I love it.

I stop in front of the full length mirror.

"I've kind of liked you since you got here, and I just wanted to tell you-" I stop, and sit down. Tell me, reader, do I sound completely stupid?

I don't know what I'm gonna do.

Come on, Bro. Youve been planning this speech since fourth grade.

I know, I know. But I just . . I dont-

"Justin? What time are you picking up Melody for the dance?" Mom comes in, and kneels down by me.

"Mom, I'm taking Mae Collins. Melody's with Samuel. Well not with, she got asked by him." I sigh, and smile weakly up at her.

"Well, why didn't you ask her?" Mom looks puzzled, and for a minute, I'm wondering the same thing. I snap out of my Melody induced trance, and stand up.

"She doesn't like me, Mom." I tell her, and she presses her lips together, but she looks like she's fighting laughter.

"You're so used to liking this Farah girl, that you don't know anything else, honey. Melody likes you. A lot, if I know anything." She rolls her eyes, and I stare at her in disbelief.

"And you like her. Heck,  a blind man could see that, Justin. And I know you know you like her. She is absolutely smitten with you, and if you seriously think you're still infatuated with Farah as you were before Melody, I really don't know what to tell you."

"The facts are, you've never spoken about Farah the way you do Melody to me, and you haven't even mentioned Farah in the last two weeks. It's been Mel, Melly, Melody, whatever you call her." Humor dances in her eyes, and I frown.

I'm not going to say, in that moment, I forgot about Farah, because I didn't.

She was on my mind, the whole time Mom was speaking.

But, not for the reasons you think.

The sentences that kept repeating over, and over was what besides beauty did Farah have? Why did I even like her?

Melody

"You look hot!" Sam comes up to me at my doorstep, and I weakly smile, not impressed by his comment.

"You look nice, also." I tell him, and he nods.

"Thanks, Mel." He mused, but it doesn't sound as good as when Justin says it.

I sigh.

Justin

Tonight was the night for everything.

All secrets that have been kept for years were about to be exposed, and I'm not sure I wanted to be there when he confessed to my best friend he loved her.

Out of all my years, when I waited on the front porch for Dad so we could play and he never showed, when mom died, when I got rejected from the cheer team, when Farah told me my hair would never be as soft as hers, this was the moment I chose to want to cry.
