Chapter One: My Boring Life…

Wow. It hit me, and it me hard. The realization of working. It wasn’t a hard core job, and no I’m not trying to balance a part time job and college all in one. I’m taking a break year to figure out what I actually want in life. That and I needed the extra money for a car, but for now I’m just a 19 year old working in a shoe store.

Yes, a shoe store, and I’ll spare you the grubby details of my co-workers and sales manager. It felt as though I was stuck in routine, and I hated that. I needed change in my life. Not a big one, but just something different.

I sigh as a get into my friend, Vanessa’s car. It was an old, bent out of shape Toyota. She received it as a hand-me-down from her dad for her birthday. But hey, who was I to complain when I didn’t even have wheels to drive to work and back.

She opens her door and climbs in as the seat squeaks lightly under her weight. She turns the key and the Ferrari that this car is, coughs into life. Vanessa is a caring girl, the one who you’d turn to for any sort of problem and she’d listen to it intently and give you advice, without judging you or hurting you in any way possible. Oh, and did I mention that she looks like something out of a Vogue magazine? Her long dirty blonde hair rests perfectly on her hips, and her eyes are waves of  intense blues and greens.

She rests her hand on the gear and turn towards me. “What is it, Dee?” She asks as a smirk plays on her lips. Ah, she knows me well. Dee is my nickname, its short for Diana. I smile openly at the windscreen in the note that she notices that something is wrong with me, without me even saying a word. “Nothing.” I smile facing her. She raises an eyebrow and gives me a look that tells me: “Don’t play games, Dee. Spill it.”  “Alright then,” I sigh. “I’m tired Van, of this!” I say pulling at my yellow fleece jacket that has a huge ‘ShoeMart’ logo in the middle of it. “You’re uniform?” She questions, a bit confused. This girl was a straight A student, but sometimes her common sense was lacking.

“No Van! Work, work, and work. I’m tired.” I say like a whiny three year old. “Dee, I understand you need a break. But you know what they’re like. They’d rather fire you then let you take time off.” She sighs, I’m sure she’s tired of it too. “Then maybe they should. Fire me, I mean. I have no purpose to get up in the morning when life is so boring.” I say, sounding as over dramatic as I possibly could. She now continues driving and says firmly, “Dee, number one: Stop being so over dramatic and two: You know you need the cash so just stick it out!” I slump further in my seat. “Chin up okay? I promise we’ll go out soon. You, me, and a whole lot of shopping bags?” She winks. I smile at her enthusiasm; it’s been a long time since we had girl time, so hanging out sometime might actually be fun. She parks in my driveway and we give each other a big hug and say our goodbyes.

I walk along the stone path that leads up to my door. I then reach into my jean’s pocket and pull out my set of house keys. I slowly open the door and enter. “Mom?” I call. “Dad?” I say. Nothing but silence. Well it seems they’re out. So it’s just me and my lovely home all to myself?

A grin creeps on my face as I think that I have the freedom of my home for a couple hours. I immediately kick of my shoes and rip of my putrid yellow jacket, as I run to my CD player, only to slip in my ‘Midnight Memories’ disk. But just before I do, my smile weakens a bit as I notice the cover. “Boy, I sure do miss them…” I think to myself. But hey, who else can just pop in a CD and listen to their 5 most favorite people in the world sing along to these beautiful songs?

I must be privileged.

I sing along to the music loudly, very loudly. Well mum’s sure to get a note from our neighbor Mrs. Barker about the noise level coming out of my house. I don’t take any of this into consideration because I’m finally having fun. “Oh, oh, oh, oh!” I sing as I skid around the kitchen table as the loud ringing noise of my telephone catches me off guard. I pause the CD and run to the phone, almost slipping in the process.

Oh, whoever ruined my delightful parade around my kitchen is going to pay!
