- Ghost

Your feet scuffled slowly through the dark, making your way down the hallway with one hand glued to the wall in hopes of finding a light switch whilst the other kept a firm grip on the blanket you were bundled up in, trying to prevent it from slipping it too much off of your frame as you walked.

The place was always eerily quiet during the late hours of the night but with the time close to hitting midnight the only sound you could hear was your own half-asleep mumblings and your footfalls on your trek to your desired destination, trusting your memory of the layout of the place to help guide you to where you wanted to be. It took a while before your hands finally found what you were looking for as you rounded the corner and with a relieved huff you switched on the light switch; the lights above you flickered to life at the action and whilst the sudden brightness was uncomfortable on your eyes you soon grew accustomed to it as you progressed forward into the room.

The kitchen was fairly silent and barren as you shuffled inside, rubbing your eyes with a yawn now that you were in the light as you trudged over to the sink, snagging a glass from the cabinet as you passed by it as you held it beneath the tap and filled it with cold water. At the sound of the tap going off you heard a familiar rumble to your right and looked down, catching sight of your beagle curled up in her own bed who had been woken up by your movement as she lifted her head lazily to look at you, staring for a moment before snorting and drooping her head back down as she went back to dozing. You smiled at that before turning back to your glass and bringing it to your lips, downing it all in one swift movement; the glass clinked against the counter sigh whilst running a hand through your tousled bed-head in an attempt to repair it to its usual style to no avail.

You spent a moment basking in the silence of the evening, looking out of the window before you trying to make out the small cluster of flowers that had been planted the year before just below the windowsill, smiling fondly to yourself at the memory upon spotting the purple flowers just barely in your field of vision swaying softly thanks to the mild wind outside. The windows were closed so you had no worry about the cold air breaching into the kitchen but even so you pulled the blanket closer to yourself as you spent a while simply admiring the outside, mystified by how it seemed to take on a far calmer air now that the night had passed over it, losing yourself to gazing at the barely visible stars dotted across the darkened sky dusting the air like faded freckles.

You were so engrossed with your thoughts you didn't notice another presence in the room till you heard a soft sigh and moments later found a pair of arms looping around your chest, with hands coming to rest at your arms taking care to rub them languidly. You didn't bother to turn around already knowing who it was and instead allowed your eyes to flutter to a close feeling a head rest against your shoulder. "Why are you up so later?" you queried, a light almost humorous tone clear in your voice as you heard a huff in response.

"I could be asking you the same thing" the voice replied and at that you couldn't help but chuckle, opening your eyes to look behind you.

Gwen shot you a somewhat drowsy smile and buried her head into the crook of your neck, humming against your skin in a way that sent pleasant chills through you before speaking again. "Couldn't sleep?" she asked and whilst you both already knew the answer you still nodded, turning your attention back to the window focusing on her form reflected in the glass rather than what lay beyond it.

Similar to you her hair was down and mussed up in a similar fashion, however you had to admit the look fit her far better than it did as you watched her sigh and move her arms so that her hands were now pressed to your shoulders, massaging them in a comforting gesture and you melted into her hold with a flustered giggle, tilting your head to face her as you pressed a kiss to her cheek, enjoying the way her cheeks flushed in response to the action. The two of you remained there for a while content to just remain like that for a time before you were jolted out of the moment as your dog trotted over to you as she looked up expecting to have some share of the cuddles as she snorted softly.

"Looks like we're not the only ones awake either" you bit back a grin as Gwen rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless and dropped down onto her knees, giving the pup the fuss she wanted as she flopped against her and chuckled at the sight before following suit, running your hands along the dog's back as you cooed and cuddled her. After a little while she backed away seeming content with the treatment and retreated back to her bed with a gruff yet happy bark and you stood back up onto your feet, pulling Gwen up with you as you balanced yourselves.

"Come on, let's go back to bed" you said, pressing a chaste kiss to her nose before you turned back around, allowing your blanket to fall back into your hands as the two of you made your way back towards your shared bedroom, closing the door behind you before allowing yourself to flop onto the bed, burying your face into the pillow with a noise of content which earned you a chuckle as she slipped into the bed beside you. Gwen pulled the covers over the pair of you, giving you ample room to cuddle into her side as her arms came to wrap around you, head coming to rest on top of your own as you pressed yourself closer against her.

You could make out the soft, rhythmic beating of her heart from your position, a sound which always proved to help comfort you whenever you were unable to sleep and you felt better now that you were in this position; after a while of silence however Gwen spoke up once more.

"(Y/N)?" With a half-asleep hum of acknowledgement you looked up at her, watching her expression soften as you locked eyes.

"You're the best girlfriend, you know that right?"

"Hey that's supposed to be my line" you puffed out your chest and feigned offense, pouting playfully in a way that made her laugh upon seeing it; after a moment though she calmed down again, regarding you with a fondness that made your cheeks feel a lot warmer than usual.

"I love you" you said, your heart fluttering as you cuddled close, resting your head against her chest once again as your eyes slipped to a close, feeling the throes of sleep gradually washing over your relaxed form as she responded.

"I love you too you dork~"
