Today was the day. Saturday. Today was the day that Harry would meet my family. This meant getting up and driving down to Brighton. Not too bad. I insisted to drive, mainly because I know the way. Harry insisted, though, that he had to hold one of my hands all the way down. As we got closer towards Brighton, I could feel his hands get more and more sweaty.
“Baby, please, relax! You will be fine.” I must have told this to him for the millionth time, but he didn’t listen.
“What if they hate me? What if they think I’m not good enough for you?” OMG, he seriously had to chill out!
“Babe, listen, they will not hate you, in fact completely the opposite, and if they think you’re not good enough for me then screw them!! Please just relax, you are making me nervous!”
“Yeh you’re right baby girl, I’m sorry for freaking out!”
The conversation just ended as we turned into the house. We had a small secluded driveway which led into the house. My family weren’t poor, put it that way! As I drove up towards the house, I could see all of my family waiting for me in the kitchen. The people that stood there were my mum, my dad, my big brother, Luke and my little sister, Charlie. They all looked slightly nervous. Luke already had the ‘don’t mess with my sister, otherwise you’ll have me to answer to look’, Charlie had the ‘OMG I’m just about to meet a Prince look’, and mum and dad had the ‘what the hell do I say?’ look.
Before we got out of the car I said to Harry,” They might be a bit formal to start with, but they are great. Don’t mess with Luke and stay clear of Charlie, she might scream really loud in your ear. Just be you and they will love you. I promise. I love you.” I leaned in for a kiss.
Harry needed the kiss to calm his nerves,” I love you too.”
“You ready?”
“Yeh, I think so.” Hesitantly, Harry made his way out of the car and towards me. I took his hand and gave him the ‘you’ll be fine, just remember what I said’ look. He obliged with a nod, took my bags out of my hand and we made our way to the door. I didn’t even have to put the key in the door, mum had already opened it.
“Hi mum!” I hugged her and turned to Harry, “This is Harry, Harry meet my mum.”
“It’s lovely to meet you Mrs Smith.”
“It’s lovely to meet you Harry.” They hugged. Phew, one out of four is good.
I pointed at my dad. “Harry meet my dad,”
“Good to meet you Harry, Soph has said so much about you from our phone conversations.”
“I hope it’s all good! It’s nice to meet you Mr Smith.”
“Don’t worry all good things!” They gave each other a firm handshake and I smiled at the sight of my father and Harry getting along. Two to go, two left.
I turned to my two siblings smiling at me in glee. “Harry, meet my brother Luke and my sister Charlie.”
Luke outstretched his hand towards Harry. “It’s nice to meet you Harry, but I will warn you now, if you do anything to my little sister, I will break your neck.”
Harry didn’t really know what to reply, “I won’t hurt Soph in any way, shape or form, so there will be no need to break my neck, I promise.”
“Good glad we got that out of the way.” I gave Luke a look, and he knew exactly what it meant, so he backed off a little.
We both turned to Charlie, who still had a ridiculous smile on her face. “Charlie, meet Harry.”
“Nice to meet you Charlie,” Harry turned around to me, “I never realised how much alike you two look!”
I replied, “Babe, don’t say that, she’ll get all big headed!”
Charlie butt in, “It’s really nice to meet you Harry, and Soph, I am the prettiest in this family, you just have to deal with second best!” She stuck her tongue out at me.
Harry disagreed, “No, I think Soph is the most beautiful woman in the world, sorry Charlie!”
We all moved into the living room, bags already dumped at the front door, Harry and I slumped on the big sofa. “What are we going to do today? Mum? Dad?”
Mum and dad said in unison, as they always do, “Either crazy golf, bowling or pitch and putt. You decide.”
I looked at Harry and smiled. “What do you want to do then?”
“Well, I quite like the crazy golf idea. Sound good?”
“Harry I don’t care as long as you enjoy yourself! It sounds great!”
“Mum, crazy golf!”
.“Ok, we’ll go at 1:30!”
That gave Harry and I an hour and a bit to do whatever we liked, I nudged Harry, “Babe, do you want to go upstairs?”
“Love to.” He whispered in my ear, then I jumped on his back, and we headed for the stairs. On the way through, he picked up the bags that we discarded earlier, once he got them, he darted for the stairs. My parents just looked at us in awe. They couldn’t believe that we were acting like teenagers madly in love, but we were. Once we were at the top of the stairs, Harry found my bedroom soon enough, opened the door dropped the bags and threw me onto the bed. “Do you realised that you are heavier now than when I did that last week?” He was getting old, and he couldn’t admit it.
“I am not heavier, but every day you are getting closer to thirty and I am getting closer to twenty five!” He threw a pillow at me.
“Now that was uncalled for!”
“Was it? Really? You just called me old!”
“Whatever!” I pulled him onto the bed and for an hour, we just lay there, talking and passing the time.
“Your brother really worried me earlier, you know.”
“Don’t listen to him, he’s just all talk and no trousers,”
Mum shouted from downstairs, “Soph, you ready?”
“Yeh just coming down!”
We all walked down to the seafront to play a bit of crazy golf. As there were five of us, we couldn’t go in teams, but I insisted on being just before Harry on each hole, just so I could laugh at how bad he was. I could feel from the moment Harry had met my family, he was a part of it. It might take Luke at bit longer to understand that I really did love Harry, but he knew I did.
I won the crazy golf, apparently because I was the prettiest, which made me smile. We went back to the house and ordered a take away. Just as we had finished eating and walked up to my room, Harry’s phone started ringing. He looked at it and it was Chelsy. He looked at me and I looked back.
“I’ll talk to her when we get back tomorrow. It’s probably nothing to worry about.” He then picked me up, bridal style and carried me into my room. He laid me down on the bed and started to kiss me, and I knew he wanted more.
I whispered, “Not tonight, especially with my parents in the house. Tomorrow. I promise.”
“Ok, you’re right. “ He whispered back.
I turned on the TV and we watched films all night until I fell asleep in his arms. I loved the fact that Harry got on with my family. He was part of the family now. I love him, and that love will never die.
