I woke up the next morning nearly lying on top of Harry in a sleeping bag. I don’t know how much we had to drink last night, but it was a lot. I remember that there was fireworks and Harry proposing to me? I think. Did that really happen? I looked down at my ring finger on my left hand. There was no ring. So did he propose to me or not? While sitting there I managed to wake Harry up. He looked straight in my eyes and asked me, “Did I ask you to marry me last night?”

“Um, yeh I think you did. I also think we had too much to drink.”

“Could you go and get my jacket? There’s something in there for you.”

I got up, in his shirt and nearly died of frostbite. I searched in his jacket pocket for some kind of box he was trying to describe to me. Instead of finding one box, I found two. He told me to bring both over to him. So, I went back to him and sat down on the sleeping bag. He opened the first box and said, “I believe I forgot to give this to you last night. This is your engagement ring.” I stared at the box for what must have been 30 seconds in awe. It was the most perfect engagement ring with an amethyst and diamonds, like Catherine’s sapphire but smaller. He put it on my finger and I still could not speak, “Well, say something. You are scaring me here. Soph?”

I finally mustered up a few words to say, “Harry. You are the most amazing person ever. This is the most amazing engagement ring ever. Thank you so much. This, right now, is the best moment of my life.” I kissed him.

“The best moment of your life, so far.” We both laughed in unison.

Once we had stopped laughing a thought popped into my head, “Did you ask my father about this?”

“Baby, of course I did! That’s the first thing I did. I’m very traditional, you know.”

“Sorry, I would have never of thought. When are we going to tell the whole world?”

“I was thinking waiting a couple of months, so we tell everyone close to Christmas.”

“Great idea. Have you thought of everything we need to do then?”

“Of course I have. I didn’t want you to be worrying about it all at the moment. All you have to worry about is the wedding itself, ok? Oh, I forgot to show you the thing in the other box!”

So, without further ado, he opened the other ring box. It was a very elegant diamond ring, which looked like it had been worn by his mother. He said, “This is one of the rings I had been given to my mother. She said to give it to the woman I truly love, at that woman is you Soph.”

“Oh Harry, it’s beautiful, thank you. I forgot too, I haven’t given you the present for our anniversary yesterday. It’s in my bag, just over there, and this time, you’re getting up!”

So, I made him get up, and gave him a cheeky slap on the ass in encouragement. “Oi! Cheeky!” I giggled and stuck my tongue out at him while he went to go and get the present. He came back down and opened the present. It wasn’t anything special, just a couple of t-shirts and stuff. Nothing like the present he got me, but never mind.

I was still quite confused why Harry had told me that he didn’t want to get engaged yet. I thought he had brought me here as an anniversary present, and that’s all. He said that he had spoken to William about it too. William and Catherine know? Of course they do, they planned half of this. I had to ask Harry. This was confusing the hell out of me. I waited until Harry had got changed before I asked him anything. He came back with two coffees and sat down next to me. He wrapped his arm around me to keep me warm too.

“Harry, why did you say to me that we weren’t gonna get married anytime soon? I thought you wanted to wait a while? You said it was too soon to get married.”

“I know that’s what I said. I kept thinking of how long my parents were ‘dating’ before they got married, and that was just under 2 years. I thought it would be better to wait and get to know each other better. William said that having Catherine as a best friend was always going to be the best option for him, but that isn’t for me. I want to get married to you, and I want you to have our children as soon as I can. You are my everything Soph, and I basically felt that if I kept you waiting too long then you may have got bored of me, or something. I think it would be better for us to get married and get to know each other in the many happy years we will have with each other, than get to know everything about each other then get married. When I first met you, I knew you were the girl I wanted to settle down and have a family with. I love you Soph and I don’t know what I would be like without you. You are my soul mate baby.”

A tear falls from my eye. He wipes it just before the remains of my mascara runs everywhere. “Oh Harry, I didn’t know I meant that much to you. You are my everything too, and I don’t know what I would do without you either. I can’t remember what I was like before I met you, and I don’t want to remember. All I want is the rest of my future with you. Through sickness and health, for richer or poorer. You are my soul mate too baby.  I love you so much.” I leant forward to kiss him. He kissed me back, hungry for more. Before we could actually get anywhere I pulled away and asked, “Can we go somewhere more comfortable?”

Harry carried me to the car and he drove back to Birkhall where we spent the next couple of days, in our own little world, barely away from the bedroom.
