The two men tried to explain to me what had happened to Harry, but I was too shocked to listen or talk to them. William and Catherine took me back to the living room and made me tea. William came over and hugged me like he had done just minutes before. Once I had come out of my trance and sipped my tea, William talked me through what the two Army men had said to them. Harry was not killed, but severely injured. He was being flown straight to Birmingham tonight; therefore, he will be there in the morning. William asked if I wanted a lift up there, but I decided to drive there myself. I needed time by myself. Just to think things over.
I was in no rush to get up there, so it took me 4 hours. Once I got around the Selly Oak area, I found a hotel for the night. Not that I’ll get much sleep. Inside of me somewhere I knew that I just wanted to run, and not see Harry in the state he would be in. only god know what state that will be. I’m scared that I won’t love him as much as I did before, but only tomorrow will tell.
I woke up the next morning, from about 4 hours sleep. Just as I woke, I heard my phone vibrating, it was William, “Hey Wills, everything alright?”
“Yeh, no, everything’s fine sweet. Did you get there alright?”
“Yeh, just fine thanks. Has there been any news when he’s gonna land yet?”
“In about 20 minutes, apparently. Are you going to go straight away?”
“Yeh, just gonna get some breakfast. Thank you Wills.”
“You know I would do anything for my little sister. Catherine and I will be up later. Give Harry a hug from me.”
“Will do.” I turned the phone off, got some breakfast and went to the hospital.
It took the doctors nearly half an hour to take me to Harry. When I had arrived he had just come out of surgery and was transferred to intensive care. The operation wasn’t serious but it did aid in his recovery, according to the nice doctor that was looking after him. I just couldn’t bear to think of what he looked like right now, but I knew I had to stay strong, not just for me, but for Harry too. As I walked into intensive care, all I could really see were all the machines beeping around me. I felt myself walking further and further towards Harry’s bed, where I could just make out who I was looking at.
I kept the tears in as I made my way to the chair beside Harry’s bed. He looked nothing like before. There were scratches all over his face, three bandages on his arms and a bandage on his torso. The doctors are saying that he would be able to make a full recovery and right now he is in a medically-induced coma, which the doctors will take him out of tomorrow.
Once I had sat down in the chair, I took Harry’s hand. I kept saying to myself that I wouldn’t cry, but eventually I had to. I stood up and kissed his forehead. As the tears were streaming down my face, then falling onto his, I heard the door open. Harry’s father, Charles, stood there sombre and alone. I lifted my head to see who it was, then at the sight of him, I carried on watching how still Harry’s face was. As Charles moved closer and closer to the bed, I lifted my head, once again, but this time I didn’t go back to watch Harry, I moved closer to Charles, who looked like he had just seen a ghost. I opened my arms out to him, and enveloped him into a hug. “He’s going to be ok, you know.” I told him, reassuringly.
“I told him it wasn’t a good idea for him to go out there, you know. I told him we would get injured, or worse.”
“I did too, but I knew that he wanted to go so bad, so I let him. He knew the dangers. Please, Charles, sit down.” He came and sat on the chair that I was sitting on previously, and I went to go and get another chair. When I came back, I saw Charles, crying in the chair. As I placed the chair on the floor, he turned to me and said, “I don’t want Harry like this, I don’t want him turning out like his mother.”
I walked over to him, “Charles, he won’t. He’ll be back with us tomorrow, you’ll see.”
