Chapter 7: Bruises

(Mark's POV)

It took them a while, but Felix and Rose finally had the strength to go back home. I had a bad feeling though. What if I was right?

Two months later...

I Skyped Rose to see if she was okay. But this time, her entire room setting was different. It was dark, the blinds were down, and she was in a long hoodie.

"Babe?" I asked, concerned. "Is everything okay?"
"No..." She sobbed. "I feel alone without you here..."
"You want me to come over?"
"No!"

That scared me. Now I knew I was right. She wouldn't answer like that if so.

"Is... Is your dad abusing you?"
"No!... He's... He's just upset. He's drinking a lot more though... Most nights, Felix and I have to do everything on our own."
"You wanna come back to my house?"
"I have to help my dad here, Mark. I wish I could, though."
"Alright... I guess I'll see you at school tomorrow?"
"Yeah... Bye."
"Bye..."

I had a bad feeling about this...

The next day...

I waited by the entrance for Felix's and Rose's bus to arrive. I finally saw it after ten minutes. But once they got off, I barely recognized them.
Felix had on his usual football jacket and a pair of jeans. But, he had a few bandages and bruises on his face, neck, and arms. Same goes with Rose, but she completely changed her look. She now wore a long sleeve, blue v-neck sweater, a beanie to hide her ears, and a pair of black skinny jeans. She had a few bruises on her face and hands.

"Rose?" I began. "Babe??"

She just walked right past me. So did Felix. This was not like them. I went to grab Rose's arm, but I saw Felix jump in the corner of my eye. He turned around and punched the hell out of me.

I fell to the ground as he gasped at what he'd done. My cheek was already turning purple.

"Mark, bro, I'm so sorry," he apologized.
"What the hell, Felix?" I asked. "Dude?"
"*Sigh*... Meet me in the locker room before practice. Okay?"
"I've got nothing else to do."
"Okay... See you after school, bro."

He gave me a weak smile and went to class. I couldn't concentrate because I couldn't stop thinking about them.

"Mark?"

I jolted up. The teacher called my name. I must not've been paying attention.

"Y-Yes, Ms. Jenkins?" I answered.
"The answer to 12x - 42 = 6x - 8?"
"Oh... Um..."
"Is there something on your mind, Mark?

I nodded. She called me out into the hall. I had a feeling I was going to get in trouble...

"Me and your other teachers have noticed that you're lacking focus in your studies today," Ms. Jenkins began. "Is there something wrong?"
"Yes..." I sighed. "You know Felix, right?"
"Kjellberg? Yes, and both him and his sister have also lacked focus as well. Is there something wrong with them at home?"
"Yeah... Their mom died a couple months ago... And... their dad began drinking, and I have a really bad feeling that something's going on at home that I don't know about."
"As in?"
"As in abuse. But I'm not 100% sure. I'm planning to go over today and see if I'm right. Plus, I'm supposed to talk to Felix before his football practice. But don't notify the teachers yet. I want you to have all the necessary information you can when you do."
"I'm so sorry, Mark. I hope you do find out the problem."
"Thanks, Ms. Jenkins."

Before Felix's practice...

I met up with him in the locker room. He changed while telling me.

"Mark," Felix sighed. "Things are beginning to get difficult at home. My Dad may not agree with this, but will you go out with Rose tonight? I have some... things I have to sort out with him..."
"Felix, what the hell is going on? Is he abusing you two?"

He didn't answer, but left to go to practice.
I told Jack, since Felix took a little time coming out to the car. We made a plan. I'd make it look like I left with Rose, but Jack will take my car and drive off with her. I'll stay behind in case something happens to Felix. Then record it for evidence.

It became time for me to go get her. I drove up, but Jack drove my car a few blocks away. I climbed up to Felix's window, knowing that he was there. I told him the plan, but he wasn't sure. He didn't want to have no parents and be sent to a children's home, but he didn't want to be abused any more either. He then let me set up a hidden camera real quick.
And so, I hid outside his window until I heard his father come in. I pressed the record button on the remote to the camera.

"Dad!!" Felix yelled. "Ta helvete av mig!"
"Shut up!" Mr. Kjellberg yelled. "I don't want to hear it!! It's your fault that she's dead!"

I heard the breaking of a bottle and Felix groan. I watched on my phone, since it was recording onto a SD card in my phone. I called Jack to come back because it was getting bad. I had to pick the right time to go in.
Just as I was about to go in, he saw me and pulled me inside. Afterwards, he locked the window.

"Run, Mark!!" Felix yelled.

I didn't, but tried to protect him from his Dad instead. I jumped in his back, trying to keep him from hitting Felix again. He backed up into a wall, making me fall off. Then he punched me square in the gut.
I fell to the floor in pain. Then, I was kicked in the face. Looks like I'd need new glasses after this. I got the shit beaten out of me before I heard sirens. Felix couldn't get to me because he had gotten his hands tied behind his back.

"Mark?!" He gasped. "Bro, you okay?!"

A weird groan was all I could muster. I was in so much pain... I saw police officers come in, but not until Felix's dad got a few more hits.
I saw Jack and Rose run in with them. They got Felix untied, and they all turned white when they saw me. I was covered in bruises, blood, and welts. I had no idea what bones were broken.

"MARK!!" Jack, Felix, and Rose gasped.

Rose got to me first and held me in her arms. She looked over my wounds and began crying. I looked over at Felix, who was crying as well.

"I-I'm s-sorry, F-Felix," I groaned loudly. "I-I tried..."
"Don't apologize, bro..." He sniffled, hugging me. "I'll never fucking forget this, man... You saved my fucking life."

And with that, I passed out...
