Rose
"Rose?" Mira's soft voice behind her made Rose sigh and lift her head up from her knees. Rose knew Mira would follow her out here, but she was honestly surprised Mira gave her this long. It had been at least an hour since the incident in the dining room, and Rose had been sitting out in the grass, leaning against a tree by herself since then.
Shifting her gaze away from Mira, Rose stared out at the large lawn in front of her. The grass was a deep green and smelled crisp and fresh, just what she needed to clear her stormy head. Birds chirped from where they sat on the branches above her, clearly not as affected as Rose was by the cool fall air as she wrapped her arms around herself to fend off the goosebumps. Resting her head on the tree behind her Rose closed her eyes and focused on the sounds and the smells, trying to ignore the flurry of thoughts crashing through her brain.
"What happened in there, Mira?" Rose asked, turning to look at her friend. Mira gave Rose a sad smile before sitting beside her in the soft grass.
"You made the room shake and the lights explode."
Roses head shot in Miras direction. Mira just smiled back at her. "I did that?" Rose asked in disbelief.
"It's your powers coming in." Mira responded, glancing out toward the large yard, her eyes dancing over the vast hedges and tall trees.
"What the hell?" Rose grumbled, grabbing a fistful of grass and ripping it from the ground. Slowly opening her clenched hand, she let the grass slip through her fingers piece by piece, trying to take deep steadying breaths as each blade fell. "This is all so crazy. Were my parents like this?"
Mira was quiet for a second as she gathered the right words, then spoke softly. "Before their death, yes, they were both Guardians. It is impossible for a human and a Guardian to reproduce. There's no other way for a Guardian to be created, other than from birth."
"Why am I just finding out about all of this now" Roses voice was low as she tried to digest all of this information in such a short period of time.
Mira remained silent, and Rose almost thought she wasn't going to answer the question, but Mira eventually sighed. "Your parents were killed before they were able to explain any of this."
Rose nodded sadly. She figured that was going to be her friends answer. "Did I use my magic when that wolf-thing attacked?"
Mira nodded. "Based on what Damian told us, you temporarily stopped time and used your power over the elements to push it away with wind. Both require a lot of power, which you only obtained because you were very scared." She explained, her small hand resting on Roses knee in an attempt to try and calm her. "Every Guardian has different sorts of powers they can access. It'll all make more sense when you start using them more."
"I feel sore, and I'm tired. Is that from the magic?" Rose asked, her body giving out a small ache at the mention of her tired muscles.
Mira nodded. "Magic takes both a physical and mental toll on a Guardian. You using a lot of magic for the first time had consequences."
Both girls stopped talking and let the soft wind and chirping birds fill their silence. Did she believe all of this? Rose honestly didn't know. It sounded just as crazy and absurd as Mira had warned her it would, but there was a voice in the back of Roses head telling her to let all of it in. That small voice was the only thing keeping her from running away. It was the only thing keeping Rose here, listening to Mira as she explained powers and mates, and good versus evil.
"Is there anything else I should know about my Guardian body?" Rose couldn't help if the words came out slightly sarcastic sounding.
"Guardians have increased...well, just about everything. We're stronger and faster than mortals. Our senses are also enhanced. We're like mortals, just on really serious steroids."
