~Chapter Ten -Gone As Soon As They Came~

Shadow's POV

"She had better be ok, and you better have taken care of her." I hear a voice grumble. "Don't worry, she's perfectly fine. I had to replace her backbone with a metal type spine, not the thing werewolves can't stand though." A familiar voice replies back. "Silver?" The deeper voice states, almost asking. "Yeah, that stuff. It's not silver." The feminine voice says. Three knocks sound and the door open. "She up yet?" I hear another deep voice say. "A-A-Aaren? D-Danny?" I can almost feel their gazes. "Shadow, you almost gave me a heart-attack!" Danny screams. "US a heart attack, THANK YOU." Aaren shouts. "W-What do you m-mean by us?" I question. They couldn't have taken care of me and worried about me, could they've?  "Us, as in us." A rough voice mumbles. "L-Loyd? H-Helmet-Head?" I question again, using Loyd's name and his nickname. I force my eyes open to see them staring at me, Danny with the most concern. "I would hug you but..." I cut him off, "I heard about my back being metal, yes, whatever." Margaret looks at me, shocked for a second that I heard that much. "I-Is Victor, Xander, and Gabriel still here?" I ask, worried for their own safety. "I'll call them back. They insisted on going out looking for you." Travis explains, pulling an amulet from his pockets. "Hey, guys. No need for searching we got her." The gray-haired my says. I heard talking amongst them, then a happy Gabriel speaks up. "W-We'll be right there!"  Danny has his worried gaze on me, laying on the bed. I force myself upwards, wincing in pain, then falling back down. "What happened?" I ask, still puzzled. Danny crouches to the ground to see my face a bit better. "You don't remember?" He asks. I shake my head 'no'. Aaren sighs and walks over to Danny, crouching next to him. "We gave chase to you two, thinking you guys were more of a threat than you already are. You tried to get away on wyverns and Bruno knocked you off while Danny jumped down to help. We followed the shouting and see you on the ground, and this Danny guy next to you. You passed out from the impact. You spine took most all the damage so Margaret replaced it with..." He looks over to Margaret, not knowing the replacement metal. "Aluminum." She states. My head tilts, my left ear flopping over a bit. Aaren flicks his fox ears, facing back to me. "-And that's the gist of what happened." I nod, still slightly confused. I push myself up again in a constant whimper of pain. I hear someone chuckle. "Can't move, eh?" I throw a nasty glance over at the person at the door. There stand Victor, Gabriel, and Xander.

"Xander, Gabriel, Victor," I say, holding feelings in. "Good to see you too," Xander grumbles. "He's still not over what happened. " I growl. I hide feelings well, Danny knows that. He knows how to decipher what im feeling just my looking at me. Danny walks over to me and whispers, "Don't cry, it's ok." I nod. "I think we should get going," I say, stumbling slowly to the wall. "You can't walk, Shadow. You won't be leaving anytime soon." Lord Sylvie walks in. "Well, I will try," I mumble. "Shadow, we might as well stay..." Danny admits. "Alright, Living Unity... Where is a place we can stay in this village?" I ask, still hunched slightly on the wall. "The only place that has enough rooms for three people is mine," Travis says. "Don't you live in a cave?" Scott questions. Travis shrugged, "Still got rooms." Loyd grunts and pulls his helmet off. "Alright, Helmet-Head," I remark. Under Loyd's helmet, he has stunning diamond blue eyes, and deep, ocean blue hair with slight brown tips. I must have been staring because I heard Danny shout, "SHADOW!" I jump slightly, sending pain through my back. "OW!" Scott sighs. "Come on, we have to get the rooms ready," Travis says. "Um... How will I get there?" I ask quickly. "Wow, girly ain't trying to walk on her own." Loyd chuckled. "I told you to NEVER call me that again..." I bark. It somehow sends everyone in the room into hysterics. I sigh, "Let's just go. Danny let me jump on your back!" I smile at him as he sighs. I get on his back, being careful not to hurt my own.

After a few hours of setting up the dark rooms, I get dropped on the bed in my temporary bed. I slowly stand up, seeing a bookshelf that takes up most of the left-side cave wall. I walk over to it, pain in a never-ending loop through my body. When I make it to the bookshelf, I sit down in the dark oak-wood chair. I shift the chair closer to the matching dark oak shelf. I scan the books. Travis has big books, little books, think books, think books, and books with strange titles. One book caught my eye, so I stopped abruptly in the middle of the books. I reach my hand out to grab it hesitantly, then pluck it off the shelf. I brush the front and back of the book lightly with my fingers, thinking if I push on it any harder, it will break. For all my knowledge, it probably will anyway. 'Echoes in the Darkness.' "Looks good?" I open the book and start reading.

Danny's POV

"I can't thank you enough, Travis? Was it?" I had sat in my room for a few, before leaving and helping Travis make some sort of food. "Again, It's not a problem. Shadow's going through a lot, I can tell. And yeah, Travis, call me whatever you see fit." I nod and continue making some steak. "Im going to go get Shadow, be right back," Travis says, walking in Shadow direction.

Travis's POV

I knock on Shadow's room door. "Shadow, we're making food and wanted to know if you wanted some?" I call in. No response. I press my ear against the door, not hearing much. I knock again, still no sound of life. I twist the door handle and walk in to see Shadow reading on a chair near the bookcase. "What book you got there?" I ask. The golden-eyed lady jumps, letting a small squeak escaping her lips. I howl with laughter. "Travis! You scared me half to death!" She fumes, only making me laugh harder. Shadow sighs and goes to try and find her spot in the book. "For real, though. What book is it?" Her ears flattened on her head. "E-Echoes in the Darkness..." I smile and walk over to her. "It's a good book, don't be ashamed!" I catch a glimpse of her smiling. "Come on, Im hungry!" I bellow, making her laugh. She rips a bit of her cloak and puts the cloth in between the pages. Shadow stands up unhurriedly and puts the book in her spot. "Hows your back feeling?"She shrugs. "Fine, hurts like the almighty gods, but fine." I nod and walk with her to the kitchen area.

"That was the best meal I've had in five days," Shadow says, putting her forearm over her head slowly. "Agreed." Danny follows her action, putting his arm over his face. "You guys seriously haven't eaten since then?" I query. Shadow rapidly shakes her head no. "We've eaten! Just nothing THIS good. Mostly deer meat, so, yeah." My head slowly dips down to stare down at the ground. "I'm going to go read, then sleep. Night boys." Shadow stands up hesitantly and stumbles to her room. Danny stays still, looking as if he is pondering life. "Why did Shadow call you 'Living Unity' earlier?" The blonde-headed male looks at me. "What?" My eyes roll. "You know what I mean." He puts his palm to his cheek and balances his elbow on the table. "That's my name. Danny the Living Unity." I hum, 'hmm', showing him I understand and it was a stupid question. The guy-with-flames-in-his-eyes stands up and walks away, clearly tired. I stand up and walk to my own room. I open the creaking, broken door to my room and go to lay down, leaving a question in my mind...

"Will Shadow stay? And has she found new friends yet?"

Shadow's POV

The next morning, Danny and I had chosen to wake up early to leave. I hop on Danny's back, mine still aching. "Take a healing potion. If you don't have one, make one." He says nonchalantly. "You sir, are no fun." I pout, pulling a small vial from my boot, filled almost all the way with a hot pink syrup-like liquid. I pop the cork off the top and down the potion. My back has less aching, enough gone for me to walk and run and jump, but it will only last for so long. I groan in agitation and hop off his back. I switch into my wolf form, a midnight black wolf, the birth mark of a waxing gibbous on my left leg, the white color blending nicely with the black fur. My piercing, yellow eyes putting the phrase 'If looks could kill' to life. I walk alongside the human with blonde hair and orange eyes.

"Off to find a new camp site..." I grumble.
