She turned around only to be met by her superior. "You're late today, Wren Kingston "
"I.. I'm sorry. " she stammered, recovering from the shock. She never thought Mr. Rodney, her manager would catch up with her. However she was still going to report to him.
He was giving her that stern look. The middle aged man was slightly bald, had brown hair with a little white ones scattered here and there. His face was slightly wrinkled.. Old age was taking its toll, he had a ridge between his eyebrows due to his constant frowning, his nose was hawkish over a thin set of lips which was barely noticeable due to his beards.. She wondered why he still kept beards.. He was tall and huge, towering her petite frame.
"Are you going to keep staring at me? Don't you know what you're supposed to do? " he roared.
"I'm sorry, Mr Rodney. " she apologized, averting her gaze to the floor.
Mr. Rodney was a really mean man and was grumpy, he gets angry at her at any slight provocation, for some reason, Wren thought he hated her and wasn't ashamed of showing it off. She was the only one who he checked on, He always threaten to fire her whenever she made a mistake. He always said words like..
"That's what you get from employing an underage," he said under his breath.
And this pissed her off. She hated being considered as being too young and naïve. But she got a lot of that and other mean words from him, she wondered why he kept a grudge against her.
For some reason she thought it was because she was fortunate enough to be employed, she was always lucky—although it was still a mystery how she got here too.
Nevertheless, she worked really hard, she knew why she was here. She didn't let Mr Rodney's grumpiness get to her. Her work was fair enough, serving the customers, and clean up the tables later after everyone left. She did it with other workers. She worked late into the night and came back home being stressed out. She managed to combine this with her academics since she had to work really hard to get scholarship into University. It was quite challenging, but worth it.
She later on signed in and then got back to work. She was assigned to a table where she served a family. They all looked happy even their five year old who looked happiest. The young woman who Wren presumed to be the mother looked happy too and Wren understood why they were this happy when she heard the little girl say "Happy birthday " to her mother. The woman looked fulfilled and her children and husband were really adorable. They made her happy and Wren couldn't help but admire the perfect family. She knew there was no place like home.
"Happy birthday ma'am " she said smiling sweetly at the family and the adorable little girl smiled back and said. "You're so beautiful "
Although it came from a kid, Wren couldn't help but smile back, holding back her blush. She never considered herself as pretty.
When she was done bringing their orders, she went over to other tables she was assigned to. She wore a smile as she served everyone. It was among the ethics of a waiter. She had to make good impression on the customers, she had to perform well. She took orders from customers and brought back their orders.
And kept making use of please... Sorry... Kindly... Excuse me... Enjoy... Thank you...
And smiling too regardless of the fact that most of the customers were grumpy and rude and full of too much complaints and making hurtful remarks such as ...the food here sucks... ...can't there be better services ?... .....I'll never return here... ...this place has its name for nothing... ...this food is tasteless etc..
And this freaked her out and she felt like shouting at them, tell them to get the hell out... But of course she couldn't, she had to remain polite and smile.. She also had a job to secure.
