Chapter 18

I stood in the middle of a forest with the moonlight illuminating a path in front of me. I took a hesitant step forward and that’s when I hear it like the whisper of the breeze, a voice calling my name. I followed the voice through the illuminated path to a clearing filled with withering flowers and in the middle of the clearing stood Setriana. Her raven winged hair billowed around her like wings. She smiled malevolently at me.

“Goodbye,” she whispered and pounced on me with her fangs bared.

I shot out of my bed screaming. It was only a dream.

“What’s wrong, Sky?” Damon asked wrapping his arms around me.

“Nothing, it was just a nightmare, go back to sleep,” I said and he sighed pulling me back down to the bed.

When i awoke in the morning and went down to breakfast the room had a solemn air. Everyone sat with their backs straight and serious expressions on their faces.

“You will leave tonight at 12 for the clearing behind the ruins, the rest of us will be their before you, positioned among the ruins and don’t worry, you’ll be fine.” Arianna said putting a comforting arm on my shoulder before exiting the room.

Everyone looked at me with worry etched into their faces and that’s when it hit me. I was scared.

I entered the clearing slowly, my eyes scanning every inch. I breathed in the air around me. It was too still and i could hear no animals moving or wind rustling the trees. I t was like they knew something bad was going to happen.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” I heard a voice behind me say and I turned to face Setriana. “The sky that is,” she elaborated.

“Yes it is and you should take the time to enjoy it because i assure you it will be the last you’ll ever see,” I said. She grinned malevolently at me.

“I do think you have our roles reversed,” she said.

“No, I don’t because unlike you my mate isn’t dead,” I said smirking while her face twisted into an expression of fury.

“You die now bitch!” she screeched and like a signal the battle exploded around us. The nightmares ran  out from the trees while the imperial guards and my friends burst from the ruins.

“Let’s dance,” I said.

I activated my power and charged. The world once again was a living buzz and surrounding Setriana was a malevolent black energy.

She sent a quick to my right side i blocked, grabbed her feet and swung her around but she used my momentum to throw off balance and kick me into a tree. It was impossible but she was just as fast as me.

“Surprised?” she said. “You didn’t really think that after that same power killed my mate i wouldn’t train myself to be on the same level,” she said.

“All that for nothing cause i’ll still kill you,” I said.

“Isn’t that your mate over there, he seems to be in a bit of trouble,’” I turned to see what she meant and there Damon was fighting a Nightmare while one crept up behind him undetected.  I saw a sword lieing on the grass and used my mind to hold a firm grasp on it and threw it towards the Nightmare stabbing it in the back.

I turned my attention back to Setriana just in time to catch her hands which were moments away from wrapping around my neck. I threw her into a tree but she disappeared in a swirl of leaves and i felt the cool blade of a sword pointed at my neck. I turned around slowly to face her behind me.

‘You can teleport,’ I said simply.

“Good guess, any last words?” she asked.

“Yeah, just two; Go Green,” I said and thick strong branches of energy shot up from the ground wrapping around her as I grabbed the sword from her hands and plunged it into her heart.

“I win,” as soon as i said that black energy exploded around me and the clearing was filled with a horrible screeching but as soon as it came it went and all that was left of Setriana was dust.

I turned to face the battlefield where the Nightmares were retreating. I looked around for Damon but i couldn’t find him and that’s when i saw him. He was lying on the field unconscious with a Nightmare hovering over him, a dagger placed over his heart.

“NO!’ I screamed and began to run but i knew i wouldn’t make it in time but then there was a blur of green and someone threw themself on Damon protecting his body as the dagger descended. A scream echoed through the clearing as the body went limp. I ripped of the Nightmare’s head, then i rolled the body over and came face-to-face with Sonja.

“Oh my god, Sonja,” I said with silent tears running down my face and onto her cheeks. She smiled up at me and raised her hand to my cheek.

“I’m sorry my princess, they told me they would kill my family if i didn’t,” she said.

“You’re going to be alright Sonja, don’t worry, I don’t blame you, you’re forgiven” I said desperately clutching onto any hope left even though i knew it was hopeless.

“I can finally rest, thank you,” she said as her eyes closed.

 I stared down at her body but strangely i didn’t feel sorry any more, I felt like she had completed her purpose and it was time for her to go. I gently laid her body on the grass and whispered a thank you to her.

I turned to Damon who was struggling to stand. I slipped a hand under his shoulders while Drew slipped a hand under the other one and Rehana held Drew’s hand while Liam held hers and Abigail came around to hole my had while Chad held hers and we looked over the battlefield where those of our surviving soldiers stood looking up at us and i smiled.

I was home.
