Chapter 2
"Good boy Scout!" I praised my horse as we pulled into the proximity of the barn. I jumped off him and walked holding his reigns the rest of the way. Once I took off his saddle and brushed him, he paraded into the open area designated for our horses during the day. I swear he never runs out of energy!
I've had Scout for about a week now and no moment is dull with him. The first thing I did when we arrived back home was wash him and he enjoyed that! We bonded over our first ride together, and later that night we laid by the pond on our land and ate carrots, well he ate all the carrots.
Today we went to the other side of our land, past the creek and over a few hills. It was a long ride but Scout loved it and is fit enough that he was able to make it there and back. The hot summer sun was still up in the bright blue sky when I got a vibrating sensation in the back pocket of my jeans. I pulled out my phone to see an incoming call from my best friend Bailey.
"Hey Kennedy what're you up to tonight?" She said when I picked up.
"Well I just got back from a ride so I was going to shower. Why what's going on?" I asked, walking in the house after pulling off my boots and leaving them on the front porch.
"Hunter called and said everyone is meeting at the usual spot, wanna come?" The usual spot, known as Hunter's house, was where everyone met on most Friday nights.
"Sure that sounds good, just let me get ready and I'll head over." I shimmied the cell so that it rested between my ear and shoulder so that I could make a check mark on a list I wrote out: "The Caring for Scout List."
"Yay! See ya soon sweet cheeks!" Bailey always called me a different nickname when she hung up. I giggled and hung up the phone so I could shower and get ready.
*Brett's POV*
I walked inside the house after a long day on the land. Dad wanted to move to Nashville for the larger piece of land for crops and such, which meant more work for the family. My younger brother Matt made it up here a few days ago, collecting some of the last pieces of furniture from our sold home in Houston. It was nice to have an extra hand now out in the field since this one was much larger than our last. Nonetheless, Nashville is beautiful and our land is large and good for farming.
I grabbed a glass out of the cupboard and filled it with cold water from the tap, it was the most refreshing glass of water I've ever had. Sighing in approval I set the glass on the counter just as Ma walked into the kitchen. She was sporting a long coral colored dress and white sandals, always so fashionable.
"Hi sweetie how was it out there?" She smiled as she pecked my cheek, getting up on her tiptoes just to reach me.
I smiled at this and answered, "Hot Ma, real hot."
She nodded, "Well I'd expect nothing less in a Nashville summer!" She winked and set the laundry basket she was holding onto the counter. "Have you checked in on that family that bought Scout?" She asked as she folded a dishtowel and placed it in one of the kitchen drawers.
"No I haven't. Wonder how he's doin'." I thought about it, hope he's enjoying his new home.
"Well, I have the address right there on that pad of paper." She pointed to a little notepad next to the phone on the counter. "Why don't you give them a call and visit. I'm sure they'd enjoy some company." She winked at me and briskly walked out of the kitchen. I had a feeling she was implying something more than just a visit to see the horse.
"Oh Mamma." I smiled as I shook my head looking out the kitchen window to see Matt starting up the tractor.
I decided to make a call. A sweet lady answered on the other line, I'm assuming it was Kennedy's mother. She told me she'd be delighted to have me over and that Scout would be happy to see a familiar face. Hanging up the phone I realized how much I stunk, filled with sweat from a long day's work. I ran up the stairs and headed to my still new-to-me room and took a quick shower.
