Chapter 6
*Brett’s POV*
The hot sun continued to beat down on the land as Matt and I worked the field. We had almost finished planting the remaining seeds for the wheat stalks when Mamma called us in for lunch. I was thankful for her intervening because my stomach had started to grumble and my throat was parched.
We walked back to the house, shirtless and tired, and recognized our skill that we had just showed on the field. Matt and I could get the job done, and do it exceptionally well. Mamma yelled at us to take our muddy boots off on the porch and it brought me back to the good ol’ days when I was younger and the only care in the world I had was catching that beetle that was hiding between the cracks on the porch steps.
“Hurry up now, ‘fore lunch gets hot.” Nana laughed at her own joke, referring to the cold pasta salad that Ma had made earlier in the morning. By the looks of it, it had just come out of the fridge. My mouth was watering just thinking about how good it would feel in my warm mouth.
Matt and I washed our hands and sat down at the table joining Ma, Pa, and Nana. Sammy, our Labrador retriever came to lay next to me by my feet, just waiting for me to hand him some scraps under the table. It was a custom, we all held hands and prayed for our meal before we ate, saying Amen as the indicator for us to dig in.
The pasta was delicious, and Sammy thought so too. We were all relatively silent as we ate the fulfilling food in front of us. When I finished eating, I looked up only to find my Ma only a few bites in. I sighed knowing that if I asked her to leave the table she would get mad at me. Ma was the one who taught me all the manners I have today, and I really appreciate it. She taught me to always treat a lady with respect and nothing less. Never get a woman pregnant unless we were married, and always work hard at everything I do. Can’t argue with her, those are pretty good things to know. I’ve learned that if you give respect, you’ll earn it back in some way or another.
Dad was conversing with Nana over something about the horses. Matt was getting up to fill his glass with more water. Sammy was looking at me expectantly like I had more food to offer, and I was just sitting there patiently. As I helped myself to a second serving of the cold pasta, I thought about the party the other night and how Kennedy came the next day to thank me.
I couldn’t pin point what I was feeling toward her, but from the very first time I met her right here in this kitchen, I knew there was something about her. She was stunning, and the way she danced had me ready to get down on one knee right there in front of her. I knew I had some feelings toward her, but I wasn’t sure how she felt about me.
She had come to tell me how grateful she was that I had brought her home that night, but I was the one that was grateful. I got to undress that little beauty and tuck her into her bed. I remembered searching through her bathroom for any painkillers that she would be thankful for the next morning. Once I had found them, I wanted to leave her a little note so that I would be on her mind just like she would be on mine.
She was a beautiful woman, and any man would be lucky to have her. When she told me about why she got so upset, I figured it was because of an ex lover that had kick started these somewhat self-conscious feelings. She didn’t deserve that. I wanted to take her hands and wrap her up just to tell her that she shouldn’t be so judgmental about herself. She’s gorgeous and should know that because of all the male attention she gets.
That girl that was trying to flirt with me the night of the party was hideous compared to Kennedy. The guy that broke her heart must’ve been a fool to lose someone as precious and wonderful as herself. If she didn’t realize this about herself, then I wanted to find some way of telling her. She’s a challenge, and that was something I liked. She isn’t just going to give herself to me, I have to work for her, I have to show her that I’m better than the dick that left her for that Stacy girl. I was determined now.
