Chapter 4
I felt the ground move from under me, or I was the one moving. I slowly opened my eyes and saw a gray color. Trailing my eyes up the warm surface, I saw the hard jaw line of a man. Not just any man, it was Brett. I turned my head, feeling dizzy and saw him look down at me. Without saying a word, he looked back up at the path in front of him and continued walking. That’s when I realized he was carrying me.
Everything went black from that point on and I don’t remember what happened after.
I took a deep breath in and then felt myself yawning. Opening my eyes, a bright amount of light blinded me as I threw my hand up to shield the sun coming from my window. I looked at the time and saw that it was far past eleven in the morning.
I looked around and was confused on how I got into my bed last night. I only remember dancing with that guy from the party and then- oh right, I remember now. Stacy Jackson. I couldn’t believe she was there last night. I highly doubt that Hunter invited her, but still I had an awful feeling about why she was there. I remembered looking across the backyard and seeing Brett talking to her. His effortless smile playing on his lips as he succumbed to the beauty that was known for stealing men.
I rolled my eyes as I thought of her, which only made my headache worse. I flipped onto my side, taking my bed sheets with me when I noticed I was in my pajamas. I looked around the room, still partially squinting from the light, and saw my clothes that I was wearing last night neatly folded on my window couch. It was then that I realized Brett must’ve changed me, which means he must of seen me; all of me. I blushed at the thought of my drunken body past out on my bed as he changed my clothes. This got me thinking as to how stupid I was to get drunk last night, I wasn’t sure what had come over me.
What a great guy to have done that for me, even tucking me into bed. I smiled and started to get out of bed. I placed my hand on my nightstand for balance when I saw two little white pills lying on a yellow sticky note.
“Hope this helps with the pain.
-Brett”
I read it over and over, smiling shyly at his neat handwriting and the fact that he took the time to write this out. I generously took the pills and made my way downstairs. Mamma was sitting on the porch swing looking out into the green fields as her husband and three boys worked. I silently made my way over and sat next to her, trying to hide my slight hangover.
“Wild night?” I couldn’t get past her with anything. I nodded slowly and she smiled looking from me then back to the land. “I remember those days. Coming home before the crack of dawn and having to wake up an hour later to start on chores. That’s where I met your father, at a moonlit party out on my buddy Frankie’s farm. He had a party one night to which I was invited to and that’s when I saw him, sipping on a beer and talking to his friends. He looked over to me and came to ask if I wanted to dance, and that’s where it all started.” She seemed to be lost in her memories so I let her while staying quiet and continuing to rock back and forth.
Tate was exercising one of our horses when he rode up the porch and tipped his hat. “Mornin’ ladies.” Mamma and I both giggled but said good morning back. He was wearing a plaid button down tee shirt and jeans, but his shirt was all unbuttoned so his muscular abs were in full view. “Kennedy, if you’re not too tired from last night’s endeavors, we would really appreciate it if you took Scout out. He’s been dying to roam more of the land.”
