Chapter 7
*Kennedy’s POV*
I slipped on my lacey white top and a pair of old light wash jean shorts then moved on to my hair. I had spent the whole day outside doing a ton of work so my hair had to be washed. I decided to just put a little hair product in my wet blonde locks and move on to my make up next. Putting on some foundation, blush, mascara, and lip gloss I looked in the mirror once more. My tan skin looked as if it was glowing because of the white lace adorning my top half. The shirt was one of my favorites; shorter in the front and longer in the back while it showed just a small peek-a-boo of my stomach above the button of my shorts. Once I felt satisfied with the look I buckled my sandals and picked up my purse that was laid on my bedspread.
Hunter had told us that his grandparents were watching the shop tonight so he had the night off of work and invited us over to the diner for some grub. I kissed Ma and Pa, then said bye to my brothers before jumping in my black Ford truck and heading into town; each of us have a Ford truck, we support those American car companies. I parked in a slot right in front of the diner and locked the door with the remote as I walked into the quaint little family restaurant.
This place was so special. On the red painted wall to the right there were thousands of photographs nailed in. Some were of the land over the years and some were of the many families that had come to the diner for its famous grits talked about all over town. Some of the photos were even in black and white, dating back to when Hunter’s grandparents, Margret and Don, came to live here. On the left wall were three or four windows with beautiful planters that had flowers and vines overflowing. The many tables at the front of the restaurant had red tablecloths, and mason jars with a lit candle in it as the centerpieces. The place had a feminine touch, obviously from Margret’s doing, but also had a work-hard-country feel to the place. In the back was the kitchen where the delicious aroma was coming from, making me want to close my eyes and savor the smell.
“Kennedy!” Hunter displayed his famous big and bright smile as he walked over to me and pulled me into his chest. His hugs were the best, bringing you close to him and squeezing you tight. The familiar cologne on him made me smile more and feel so at home in this place.
“What have you got cookin’ for us tonight?” I asked sneaking a peek at the kitchen behind us, feeling my stomach start to growl.
“It’s a surprise, you’re going to have to wait for Bailey to come.” Just as he said her name, Bailey walked in the door in a cute pink dress and silver sandals with her purse hanging loosely on her shoulder. “Damn.” Hunter whispered. I looked up at Hunter who had his eyes locked on Bailey as she walked in.
“Am I missing something here?” I questioned looking between the two of them. Bailey was blushing and had a small smile set on her lovely face as she came over to us. Giving Hunter a hug first, she turned toward me and squeezed me tight.
“Howdy! I don’t know about you two but I’m starvin’!” I agreed with her and we went and sat at our usual table, at the back right of the diner.
Margret, Hunter’s Nana, came over to say hi to us. She is the sweetest old lady I’ve ever met. I made a mental note to take a weekend this summer to drive out to see my grandparents, I’m sure they miss us as much as I miss them.
Margret had short white hair that was curled to perfection in little ringlets on her head, teased a little, and sprayed with hairspray that smelled like coconuts. She always wore long ankle length colorful dresses due to the heat of the summer. Her wrinkly face shone bright with admiration for her precious grandson and she always had a smile on her face. She was one of those grandparents that worked hard for where she is today, and she makes sure to instill that in the many lessons she gives her grandchildren. She’s one of the few people I admire in my life.
